Is it possible to erase tracks in a section in pattern mode , if you don't like it?

Yes, of course. But your terminology needs to be adjusted... It is not just semantics it will help you understand how Pattern mode is structured.

There are 16 Tracks, 1-16 - this much is easy. But there are also 16 Sections, A-P.
So when you say "Erase tracks", this has to be further defined... And the XF has different functions (Jobs) that cover just about every possible scenario.

There is "Track 1" in Section A
There is a "Track 1" in Section B
Another in Section C, and so on.

So unlike Song mode where there is just one "Track 1", you must further define, exactly what data you wish to remove.

Also the Motif XF makes a difference between the words "erase", "delete", and "clear".
Erase - removes data but leaves the measures empty.
Delete - removes data but also removes the measure, thus data closes ranks
Clear - removes specific data from its current status.

Also in this discussion is the RECORD TYPE = REPLACE and PUNCH... which allows you to overwrite the data within the sequencer. REPLACE removes previous data as you create new data. PUNCH removes previous data between specific points.

So to answer the question directly: yes, you can.
Quick Erase: You will notice the word "Erase" appears above one of the Function buttons ([F4] ERASE) while you are in Pattern Record. Holding down that button and holding down the offending Key (or Keys) will allow you to erase data on-the-fly... Without stopping the sequencer or your workflow. Say you don't like your Hihats in a drum groove you just created... Hold [F4] ERASE + F#1, G#1, A#1... As the pattern cycles you will be removing (erasing) the data for those notes!!! This works great for drums, but can be trouble for musical parts... Although a rogue note is easily removed, simply hold the offending note as the Pattern cycles.

ERASE, DELETE, CLEAR
Simply figure out which one of these "JOB" functions most closely defines what you actually want to accomplish. If you use them interchangeably, you will not always get the results you need.

PATTERN mode, uses "Phrases" - this defines a recording done in a Pattern Section.
Say you begin recording in a Pattern, by recording on Track 1, Section A.
Your recording is automatically placed in User Phrase 001. Yes each recording you do to a Pattern is housed in a Phrase, the XF automatically gives it a number 001-256 (16 Tracks, 16 Sections).

After recording your first few Phrases you can see that the XF has given it a number by pressing [F4] PATCH.
Here your Phrase has been "patched" to a grid representing the 16 tracks in Section A. Each Section will have the ability to patch 16 Phrase.

Say you recorded your basic Drum groove in Phrase 001, Track 1, Section A.
And you realize that Section B needs this exact same Drum Groove... You can select Section B, and simply activate Phrase 001 in the patch grid of Section B. No need to rerecord it, simply highlight the area corresponding to Track 1, and use the Data Dial or [INC] button to select 001.

Any time you require this drum groove, in this PATTERN simply "patch" Phrase 001 to the Section in question.

I'm going through this explanation to make this point. If you get rid of or change phrase 001 - you've changed it everywhere it is used. If you get rid of phrase 001, you therefore MUST understand which of the methods to use to get rid of it!

Do you just no longer want to use it in Section B (leaving to play as originally programmed in Section A) or do you want to get rid of it in its entirety, every where it is used.

We get the question often, does it have to be so complicated, and the answer is, well, yes it does! When you are working on your music, you want these tools. They are there for surgery, you want your doctor to have the exact tool for the job... If all you have is a hammer, removing your appendix will not be pretty. 🙂

If you simply made a mistake and want to redo your recording - simply use REPLACE as the Record Type. This will surgically replace just the current Phrase.

If the same Phrase is "patched" to several Sections... You will be rewriting them all simultaneously.

The [JOB] CLEAR PHRASE... erases the data you recorded in that particular Phrase. The Phrase remains "patched" to the Section
The [JOB] CLEAR TRACK... allows you to select which attributes you want to clear about the data on this track
The [JOB] CLEAR PATTERN...can be used to surgically get rid of data in a specific Section or All Sections, as you may require.

Press [JOB]
You will find your surgical tools listed under the Function buttons.
Phrase, Track, Pattern.

It is worth your time experimenting with these on a scrap Pattern until you are confident about how they work. Knowing why they exist can, indeed, help you understand which one is the best one to do the job.

Hope that helps. If you are still uncertain, post back here.
