true Hammond B3 Rock sound

Any opinions as to what layers make the best rock Hammond B3 sound. I am currently using a combination of Progressy, On Road ASI 1, and Rock ASI 2. Close but not perfect. I had Crunchy in but didn't like it. Thanks, John

Don't layer organ sounds, the results will be odd and better replicated through other methods. There is such thing as a "true Hammond B3 rock sound" there are hundreds and hundreds, you can be very specific about B3 sounds and can, with a synthesizer, emulate a great variety of sound alike B3 sounds if you know what you're doing.

The Hammond sound can vary greatly from rock tune to rock tune. When you hear complaints about organ sounds in synthesizers, the real difference is in how it behaves when "changing" settings, once you match the settings, you pretty much have the sound...

So I've been trying to figure out what the organs have been missing and I can't quite put my finger on it. Probably because I'm not a seasoned organ player..I've been trying to learn the intricacies of playing the organ and it's so hard to know which organ patch is the "right" sound to be used in regards to the song/style I am playing. Obviously that is a very subjective issue. But I would love to have more insight on some starting steps to make it easier to express myself.

Could you explain a little deeper in regards to what you're implying by matching the settings?

Any tips on where I can start to tweak the B3 patches? - I see that there are configurations that adjust the frequency, speed etc.. of the rotary, Leslie and other aspects of the organ. Is that a good place to be "dialing in" the sound?

You also said layering the organs isn't the best option. So would you recommend putting different organs on different parts of a performance to quickly and smoothly switch between the different "modes" the B3 has to offer? Is that one of the other methods you would advise to get better results?

You can learn the basics of how the organ (as first keyboard instrument) creates sounds by adjusting harmonics. It truly is the Father of the Synthesizer. Please see these plain language articles:
