Hello
This is my first post so be gentle with me. I know my way around the MOXF8 (and the ES8 before it) as an instrument, but linking up to cubase is a step too far for this middle aged man. I jumped in and a hit a brick wall but through reading the tutorials on here and watching some steinberg videos I eventually feel I am nearly there. And then today's problem....I am trying to record the MOXF sequencer contents in to cubase with the sequencer to be in sync. I followed Bad Mister's forum posts to others and It seemed to be a success, but when I checked the midi page I am out by some fraction of a 16th note. I am sure I should not be experiencing that and there is a simple solution.

I recorded a performance direct into a MOXF SONG.
The MOXF is then set to Quick Setup 1
Cubase is set to send out midi clock
The record track in cubase is set to a MOXF VST track (as per the template on the opening projects page)
The track has the input set as ' all midi inputs'
The track has the output set to 'not connected'. Any other setting gives me a loop generating double notes.
I press record on cubase and the MOXF does as expected and starts playing sending its midi out.
I check in the midi editor and it is out by about a 1/4 of a 16th note.

So does anyone know what I am doing wrong? I am using a shiny new iMac as my computer.
Thanks in advance
Graham

For help with any computer related issue, we need to know the type of computer (Mac or PC), (you did mention iMac); the Operating System you are running, and the version of Cubase you are attempting to work with.

For example, if you are running Cubase Pro 8, there is a *known issue* that we are expecting a fix for shortly.
If you are running Cubase AI or any other version of Cubase then we can help you now.

But without knowing what version of Cubase we cannot zero in on your issue. We would be happy to clarify the process for you but we need that version info.

Thanks.

There are a couple of steps here that are problematical ...

_ We are not sure what "template" you are using "as per the template on the opening projects page" ??? What does that mean?
_ We don't recall a Template designed for what you are attempting, which is to transfer a MOXF Song in real time. What is the name of this Template?
_ How many MIDI Tracks are you recording in Cubase?
_ The track's MIDI OUT set to "not connected" because any other setting generates double notes... That's a problem.

If real time transfer is presenting a problem - we (highly) recommend the following method:
SAVE the Song as a SMF and simply import the data to a Cubase Project... You need a USB stick to shuttle the data over to your computer... And you can simply drag 'n' drop the file at measure 1 of a Cubase Project. Here's how...

Moving a MOXF SONG into a Cubase Project

This method will guarantee the timing and position of all MIDI Events... They will appear exactly as they did in the MOXF sequencer. And it's quicker, easier, and less likelihood of errors or setup problems.

Let us know.

Firstly I appreciate the patience shown here. I have seen the SMF option and will give that a go tomorrow ( it is bed time in the uk).
The template I mentioned: since loading remote tools when I fire up cubase the steinberg hub appears. On that under the tab 'recording' an option for 'yamaha MOXF with VST editor ( 2 stereo rec mode)' comes as an option. That looked like it was set up for me as a MOXF VST user. Maybe I am wrong.

I am trying to record 4 channels of midi to one track on cubase, which I plan on dissolving into 4 separate tracks of midi data

In this situation I have ' not connected ' entered whilst recording then assign to MOXF VST midi in channel any
on playback.

I know I am doing something wrong because it is just me an MOXF and a brand new powerful enough computer that is not running anything else at the moment apart from cubase.

Again thanks for the patience.

If you want to transfer data in realtime from the MOXF sequencer to an external DAW (Cubase) you need to ensure the following settings. (Forgive me if I miss something, I'm currently away from my gear and will do this basically from memory (sorry)).

The DAW will need to be master MIDI clock and you will set the Tempo there.
In Cubase go to TRANSPORT
Find "Project Synchronization Setup…"
Under the MIDI CLOCK OUT options DESTINATION place a mark next to the PORT 1 going to the MOXF

Also go to PROJECT > TEMPO TRACK
Set the Tempo to the desired amount... Cubase will be the master clock and provide the Tempo.
Click the Metronome icon on the toolbar so you can FIX the Tempo you require.

There are several settings in the MOXF to verify.
Press [UTILITY]
Press [F6] MIDI
Press [SF2] SWITCH
Set Local Control = Off
Press [SF3] SYNC
Set MIDI SYNC = external
Set SeqCtrl (Sequencer Control) = in

Make sure the ARP OUT SWITCHES are OFF... There is no reason these would be set On, unless you were previous recording/assigning Arp data OUT via MIDI... If you were go back and set the Arp Out Switches = OFF
Press [ARP EDIT] > [F6] OUT CH

From the main SONG or PATTERN screen
Press [F3] TRACK
Press [SF2] OUT SW (Output Switches)
Set the Track INT SW 1-16 = OFF all should be set to Off
Set the Track EXT SW 1-16 = ON all should be set On

In Cubase create one MIDI Track... using the VST INSTRUMENT setup for the MOXF VST will create the track
The MIDI IN = All Midi Inputs
The MIDI OUT will be automatically set to "MOXF VST - Midi In"
But set the Channel to "ANY" so that each incoming MIDI Channel will be echoed back to the MOXF on the same channel it came in on.

You should now be set to transfer the data in realtime from the MOXF to Cubase.

We have eliminated the need to set "Not Connected"... Local Control is OFF, the INTERNAL SWITCHES being set OFF means these tracks are set only to go OUT via MIDI, they will arrive in Cubase and be recorded to that MIDI track, then echoed back to the MOXF thru the Editor VST, where they trigger the MOXF tone engine.

You can choose to Monitor Direct or via the MOXF VST Audio Lane.
In the lower left corner of the Editor window you have Monitor options.
You can select to Monitor Direct there... If you do mute (press the "m" on the MOXF VST Audio Lane to prevent doubling.

You can use the MIDI function: DISSOLVE PARTS by Midi Channel to separate the data to separate tracks.

Hope that helps... it's the best I can do away from my gear. Let me know.
