FC7 Expression Problem

I have a MOX8 and a Yamaha FC7 for expression. I am playing a show where I have a hundred or so voices (performances) saved in Master so I can change (inc) very quickly. My problem - often when I have my expression pedal at less than full volume - perhaps only at 10% or something like that, when I inc to my next setting, the volume begins at 100% until I touch the pedal. I am forced to try to move the pedal at the same moment I increment the voice -- and, of course, fail many times. It is jarring to the listener - performer.

Another problem, unrelated I believe, it that I have a single key (F1) that often sounds loud even when I press slightly - that is, the velocity seems not to be read property. Very weird - it is only that single note, and only for certain voices.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Workaround for FC7 issue. Store all your Patches with initial volume =0 or initial volume = 50%.

Volume controllers, either on the surface of your instrument, on an external MIDI controller, or in your case the FC7 can be left in any position from the previous performance. As such, volume controllers do not become active until they have been moved and thus "hooked and latched" onto the Volume level of the NEW Performance.

As you have experienced, when selected, the NEW performance will initially play at whatever volume it was previously stored. That is until you have moved the FC7 to the equivalent position of your NEW volume, and "hooked" it, making the FC7 active. This is almost globally true for all digital controlled (non-analogue) instruments.

You can set and store Performance volumes as 0, allowing you to "swell" in with the FC7, which is a lot more musically pleasant than a "BANG" volume jump when switching performances.

Or, you could set all Performance initial volumes to a predetermined, more "sedate" volume, for example 50%, 60%, etc. This allows you to make less intrusive, less obvious volume adjustments on the fly.

As for your keys... velocity sensor failing. I can't answer that. I would recommend posting the velocity issue in a new, separate post.

Hi Charles, Welcome to YamahaSynth!
You posted in the MONTAGE Forum heading (although you have MOX8) -- we will move the post to a more appropriate heading (MOXF as it works the same as your MOX).

On the MOX8, if you would like to have your FC7 pedal respect the current position rather than recalling the stored position, you can do so by setting the CONTROLLER RESET parameter to your preference. Here's how:

Press [UTILITY]
Press [F1] GENERAL
Press [SF6] OTHER
Set the "CtrlReset" (Controller Reset) parameter = HOLD

This will allow your FC7 pedal to be kept at the current value when you change programs. Many prefer this rather than having the VOLUME reset to the "stored" value.
You can [STORE] this preference to your UTILITY settings - and it will be apart of your MOX8's system settings - and written to all ALL data Files you make from this point on.

Hope that helps.

Hi BM... can you do this with the MODX also?

Of course, but please post MODX questions in the proper forum heading. Thanks!

I think the Montage and MODX forums should be merged, tbh.

It's the same OS, topics are read and answered by people owning both. And they're treated together everywhere else as well (learning materials here, YouTube channel, IdeaScale).

I just put a suggestion on IdeaScale https://yamahasynth.ideascale.com/c/idea/284683

Thanks so much for the ideas. This is a great resource. Will try the various fixes.
