Hello! I recorded a 16-track song on my Yamaha MOXF8 and wanted to mix it down. To do this, I saved the song in SMF (Standard MIDI File) format onto a USB drive. I then connected the MOXF8 to Cubase 13 Artist and created a new project, adding a VST instrument track for the MOXF. After importing the SMF file, the MOXF synchronized with Cubase, displaying all 16 tracks of the recording. I switched off the local control from the MOXF’s utility menu to prevent MIDI conflicts. The MOXF has two volume sliders: the master volume slider and the DAW level slider. Currently, the DAW level slider is set to zero. When I increase the DAW level slider, I can hear double sounds from the song, which I understand is normal behavior in this setup.
I wanted to add effects to some tracks, which is why I moved the song to Cubase. However, I noticed that the song is louder during playback in Cubase, but it sounds quieter after exporting. I'm not sure what I might have missed, and I need help solving this issue. Could you guide me on what I should do to fix this?
I’m not sure where to post this question—should I post it in the YamahaSynth Forum or the Cubase Forum?
Thanks!
Volume/level can be in 3+ places - midi file, cubase, moxf. You need to check them all.
The Moxf has a volume control and so does Cubase. There can also be, and usually is, a volume/level stored in the midi file itself.
The actual volume/level you hear when you play a midi file is going to depend on the level stored in the file AND the level programmed into the voices/parts that actually produce the sound.
The MIDI file only has instructions for creating sound. Then Cubase, or Moxf will have the instruments, and their programming, that will actually produce sound using those instructions. If you play the same song using different instruments/programming you can get a wide variety of results and sound levels.
I suggest you check the various volume/level settings that are being used. You may also want to just play the midi file with the default OS media player to see if that is different than what you are seeing.
... but it sounds quieter after exporting ...
Curious if exporting means you've rendered the MIDI to Audio. And, in any case, the thing that's quieter is an audio track you've recorded.
