A question about mixing a song in Motif XF6.

The song stored in the Motif XF6 and not imported to the Computer/Cubase

If  I hook up the Motif via Ethernet, can I then mix the song/edit the effects on the computer instead of doing in the Motif or does the song need to be moved via USB to the synth?

Sorry, the question is not clear.

The SONG is in the Motif XF6 - okay this we get
It is not imported into the computer or into Cubase - okay this we get
If you hook the Motif XF to your computer via Ethernet you can
1) FILE the song to your computer hard drive (Save as an .X3A)
2) you can record audio direct to to your computer hard drive as a 16-bit/44.1kHz stereo .wav File -

You cannot mix the song/edit the effect on the computer - what program on the computer???? You don't say. The computer is a stupid (very stupid) box of electronics without SOFTWARE (like Cubase)... It has no ability to address (communicate) with the Motif XF without software. You can write FILES from the Motif XF directly to the computer's hard drive. The computer will just see the data as a FILE.

or does the song need to be moved via USB to the synth?

I don't understand this part of the question, at all. Sorry... via USB to the synth... the SONG is already in the synth... that's the first thing you said. Please clarify what you mean.

Perhaps the following will help:
_ You can record audio - that is, you can MIXDOWN your Motif XF SONG directly to a USB stick plugged into the Motif XF's USB "TO DEVICE" port. Result a 16-bit/44.1kHz stereo .wav file.
_ You can record audio - that is, you can MIXDOWN your Motif XF SONG directly to your computer drive via Ethernet. Result is a 16-bit/44.1kHz stereo .wav file.

In both cases you are creating a FILE... basically you are transferring finished data to a FILE - like backing up what you've done. There is no real time manipulation of the data is necessary. The mix is already completed, the data is completed, finished - any changes you need to have made need to have been done with AUTOMATION before you document it in this FILE.

AUTOMATION will automatically recreate your "mixing" moves - volume changes, pan changes, program changes, Effect changes, etc. One uses AUTOMATION so that the entire final mix takes place with just two commands: START and END. So that all you are doing during the transfer is writing a FILE to either a USB stick or to your Computer Hard Drive.

If you want to actively "mix" the data in real time - then install Cubase - then you will have full control of the Motif XF front panel and all its Control Sliders and Effects and buttons, etc., etc., during the mixing process.

Writing an AUDIO FILE to a USB stick and writing an AUDIO FILE to your computer Hard Driver (via Ethernet) are pretty much the same thing - only the target is different.

OK, thanks for good info!

I have Cubase AI5 installed and all the drivers that are supposed to be on the computer.

Then I understand that I can use Cubase ai5 as a remote mixer to the Motif XF 6 so that I can mix the song on the computer instead of doing it in the small window on the synth.

Mixing is the art of combining channels together for the purpose of creating a final balance of the instruments on each Track. The screen you are looking at has little to nothing to do with what you are doing - as mixing is all about the sound.

Mixing is more a physical activity. Although your computer screen is undoubtedly bigger than the Motif XF6 screen - it has no sliders, and no knobs to physically touch - you must use the "pictures of sliders" and the "pictures of knobs" to physically mix.

We recommend that even if you use Cubase AI5 as your DAW, that you use the Control Sliders and Knobs of your Motif XF6's front panel to do the physical mixing. Moving a slider with a mouse is about as counter-intuitive a mixing tool as exists on this planet (this is my humble opinion). When you need to fade three things down while bring two other things in - the mouse is a horrible item to get this done. You will find the CS (Control Sliders) of your hardware Motif XF much more physically capable for the task

Now, that said, if you want to look at the response to your Control Slider movements on your computer screen (we're pretty sure that is what you mean) then setup to use the Motif XF front panel to do the physical mixing and the Computer to draw pictures on the screen (what it does best) 🙂

Hope that helps.
