Hi,

I am a longtime Yamaha user, currently have the MOX6 with some 3rd party voice libraries installed, and just purchased the MOXF6 and MUTEC 2 GB flashboard. I am looking to duplicate some of the MOX sounds I currently have and also take advantage of the 3rd party samples that are available. I purchased the Chick Mark 5, the DCP Vintage keys and Air libraries, easysounds Dance Pro, and downloaded the free Inspiration in a Flash, CP1, EDM expansion, Twisted Tools, Ujiie voice/samples from Yamaha. I will be using the Melas Total Librarian and Waveform Editor to load sounds, edit in Song/Pattern mode, and but will probably be doing some editing from the front screen as well. (Mix voices mostly)

My first question involves auditioning voice/sample sounds before burning them to my flash drive. With the exception of the Chick Mark 5, which I will be installing complete (I think its just 1 voice). I will be picking and choosing from each library for whatever voice I think I need or grabs my attention. From what I've read in this forum, its possible to load the voice library into the moxf and leave the sample on the USB drive for audition purposes, and then once I've decided which voices I want I can elect to load those voices with waveform (sample) which will burn the sample onto my Mutec flash memory. Is this correct ?

Also, my understanding is that the flash board is limited to a certain amount of waveforms regardless of the memory size. Reading the CP1 documentation, it seems that it consists of 119mb of samples and 2048 keybanks. Are keybanks the same as waveforms?

Finally, I have some custom MOX voices I made that I would like to (using the Melas Voice Editor) install in the MOXF. How much compatiblity is there between the waveforms on the MOX and the MOXF. Does it just depend on which I'm using?

Thanks,
Ben

No, sorry, that is not correct. Your USB drive is not near fast enough to retrieve and playback audio waveforms with 128 channels of audio. The price difference between the Flash Board and an equivalent amount of memory on a USB drive should indicate just how much more robust the Flash Board memory has to be. The only way to audition Libraries is to install the data to your Flash Board.

We are not certain where you read that the sample could remain on the USB drive while being accessed by the MOXF. That cannot be done. What you are going to do is go through the Libraries and decide which data you feel is a must keep. Then with the Melas Waveform Editor you will open each Library in turn and drag and drop the Voices you want into a new Library field. Because the Waveform Editor also assembles the Waveforms and their Samples, it will allow to build a new Motif XF ALL data file .X3A, which can then be loaded into your MOXF.

So after you've gathered all the information on your computer and created the new file... You'd format your Flash Board, and then load your newly created File.

Also, my understanding is that the flash board is limited to a certain amount of waveforms regardless of the memory size. Reading the CP1 documentation, it seems that it consists of 119mb of samples and 2048 keybanks. Are keybanks the same as waveforms?

No, Keybanks are individual Samples... A sample is mapped to a region of keys across the keyboard and to a specific velocity range. So a Sample is said to occupy a KEYBANK. At maximum some 256 Keybanks can make up a Waveform.

There are 128 MIDI Notes C-2 to G8
Each note could hold at maximum two samples - this is to accommodate stereo (a left and a right).

The maximums are as follows:
2048 Waveforms on a Flash Board
8192 Sample Keybanks total
Whichever comes first...

The Melas Waveform Editor will keep count of all the Waveforms, all the Samples and your total memory.

Finally, I have some custom MOX voices I made that I would like to (using the Melas Voice Editor) install in the MOXF. How much compatiblity is there between the waveforms on the MOX and the MOXF. Does it just depend on which I'm using?

Just to be clear, the MOX did not deal with user Waveforms and user Samples, so you can "Load" the MOX Voices to the MOXF... The word "install" is used to describe transferring Waveform and Samples to the Flash Board. You would "LOAD" MOX Voices into the Internal Voice locations and it would reference Waveforms already in the MOXF preset Wave ROM. The MOXF has a "lookup table" it will find the appropriate Waveform for every MOX Voice, and this will not impact your Fladh Board at all. The MOX had 355MB of preset Wave ROM, the MOXF has 741MB of preset Wave ROM and includes all the MOX waves...

The MOXF will read your MOX files directly, no external Editor or program is necessary. Just pop in your USB drive and load the data.
.X4A ALL
.X4V ALL VOICE
.X4G ALL ARP
.X4S ALL SONG
.X4P ALL PATTERN

None of this data is housed on the Flash Board.

Hope this helps.

Great,

This is very helpful information. So I'm assuming that using the Melas Waveform editor makes it easier to load Motif XF files onto a MOXF because you can specify which user banks to use and make sure nothing gets loaded in User bank 4 correct?

On a related note, does it matter if the sample waveforms are in the user tab or the FL1 tab when viewing in the Waveform editor and saving an X3A file or X3V? I noticed in the Inspiration in a Flash file has all the waveforms in the FL1 tab, whereas some of my other 3rd party libraries have the samples listed in the USR tab. I assume this refers to the 128Mb of user ROM thats available on the Motif XF , but not on the MOXF. Does it make sense to move the samples in the Waveform editor or would I do this when loading the X3A / X3V . I 'll probably save my own file as an X3V so I can add voices/samples without effecting whatever SONGS/MASTERS I'm working with.

Is it possible to create an X3V file that only effects certain User Banks and Slots? For example, say I create an X3V file that only has Voices in User Bank 1 and slots A1-16. Would loading that file then only effect those slots and leave everything else in in the User Banks/Slots alone?

Thanks,
Ben

Well, nothing ever gets loaded to the MOXF User 4, and you can certainly load Motif XF files to the MOXF directing the data to the User Banks of your choosing. What it (the Waveform Editor) does do is make it a whole lot easier to assemble Voices from multiple File sources. Because you can work entirely offline (in your computer) you can easily see at a glance where you are putting things. You work offline, create a File and then load that file to your MOXF. You must remember not to use USER 4... Because you are loading this file to a MOXF.

But you can certainly redirect any Motif XF data without the Waveform Editor. The Editor just makes keeping track of everything easier. And after working with it for a while, you'll understand that in the computer you simply drag the name of what you want to where you want to place it in the new Library file. There is no waiting for the item to load and install while you are working in the Editor. So assembling is less of a mental burden.

When you are loading and installing data one by one from a USB drive (without the Waveform Editor), it takes a great amount of concentration to keep up with what you're doing. If it takes 10-15 minutes to install something, you may come back and forget what you wanted to do next. The Waveform Editor lets you very quickly assemble the Voices... Then make the file. Once you have the File, you just load it in one operation! It still takes time to load/install but it all happens at once.

On a related note, does it matter if the sample waveforms are in the user tab or the FL1 tab when viewing in the Waveform editor and saving an X3A file or X3V?

No it matters not if the Waveforms and Samples are in USR, FL1 or FL2... The MOXF just finds the Waveforms and installs the Samples in the one place it has to put them on your single slot FLASH BOARD. The Waveform Editor will let you create an ALL data file .X3A, not an ALL VOICE file .X3V

If you want to load the data created in the Waveform Editor without "effecting whatever SONGS/ MASTERS" you're working on, then you must select to LOAD via TYPE = 1 BANK VOICE... from the .X3A file you create with the Editor.

Is it possible to create an X3V file that only effects certain User Banks and Slots? For example, say I create an X3V file that only has Voices in User Bank 1 and slots A1-16. Would loading that file then only effect those slots and leave everything else in in the User Banks/Slots alone?

You can only create a Motif XF ALL VOICE file if you have a Motif XF. You will use the Editor to create a .X3A File, then load either individual Voices or single Banks from within that ALL data file. To be clear, in order to load Voices in User Bank 1, locations A01-A16, and not disturb the other 112 Voices in User 1, you would set your MOXF to Load TYPE = "voice"
You would navigate to the .X3A file press [ENTER] to open that File, navigate to Folder containing the 16 Voices, then load them one by one.

If you have a bank of 128, then you can load via TYPE = 1 Bank Voice.
This will load only the 128 Voices in that bank, leaving your other internal user data unchanged.

Ok, everything is making sense. Still waiting on my flashboard right now so haven't really started installing samples yet, but have been exploring the various libraries with the editor.

Regarding User Bank 4 I was referring to this article: https://yamahasynth.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=481:loading-motif-xf-chick-corea-to-a-moxf and how you need to redirect the data from User Bank 4. Anyway, the file I have for Chick's Mark 5 has the new Voices in User Bank 2 so its an non-issue anyway.

Also, the manual for the editor says :

The program is able to open Motif XF X3A, X3V, X3W and X3G files, as well as Motif XS X0A, X0V, X0W and X0G files. It can generate All (X3A, X0A), All Voices (X3V, X0V) files, All Waveforms (X3W, X0W) files and All Arpeggios (X3G, X0G) files.

I also attached a screenshot showing the menu where you can create/select all voice files.

Is the issue that the MOXF can't load an X3V file?

No, you're thinking correctly... the MOXF can load a Motif XF ALL VOICE (.X3V) File. You can use the Waveform Editor to create a Motif XF ALL VOICE file and use that to load data to your MOXF - just ignore USER 4.
