Hi!

(My first post here, so bear with me ...)

After watching online demos, I was very close to get an MX88. But after realizing that it needs an external computer editor to access all its settings, and taking its limited master keyboard features into considerations, I had second thoughts.

So, I think I will probably be more happy with a MOXF8, which of course also has a lot of other extra features, nicely summed up by Bad Mister in the post
https://www.yamahasynth.com/forum/what-exactly-is-the-mx88-and-where-does-it-fit-in-the-yamaha-stage-piano-synth-line-up/latest
(Also, it's a bit more expensive.)

I have a few questions related to this:

(1) Can the MOXF6/MOXF8 be completely programmed from the machine itself without an external computer editor?

(2) If not, what are the settings which can only be accessed from an external computer editor (or using sys-ex commands)?

(3) In the post above, Bad Mister sums up the various ways MOXF6/MOXF8 are better than MX61/MX88. Are there any opposite cases, where the MX61/MX88 are better than MOXF6/MOXF8 (since MX61/MX88 are newer synths)?

(3) Can the MOXF6/MOXF8 be set up to act as a master keyboard, with four (or more) independent keyboard zones, transmitting on four (or more) independent MIDI channels?

I know the answer to some of these questions probably is "Read the fine manual". And I will. But telling the user "You need an external computer editor to control this setting" is not necessarily something that will be spelled out in a synth manual.

I think for the context of what you are asking, the answer is yes. I qualify that because of the word “completely”... the MOTIF XF allowed the user to “sample” - record their own Waveforms. But short of that, it is completely programmable onboard the instrument. And while you can’t “sample” you can load any samples compatible with the bigger/ more expensive MOTIF XF.

The MX61 is 10 pounds in weight.

MOXF has a MASTER keyboard mode with four Zones.

Thanks for your quick and very helpful feedback, Bad Mister!

(1) Thanks for calling out dealing with samples. And yes -- I should have been more clear when saying "completely". I didn't really expect to be able to do sampling without using an external computer program. What I should have said was "Can the MOXF6/MOXF8 be completely programmed from the machine itself without an external computer editor (except for dealing with samples)?"

And, the answer to this question seems to be "Yes!". So I am very happy.

(3) All of them (MOXF*/MX*) seem to be pretty lightweight compared to their Motif counterparts. But if weight is the only thing MX* beats MOXF* on, I think I will go for the latter (smiley).

(3) (Apparently I don't know how to count to numbers higher than three ...). Nice -- four master keyboard zones sounds great!
