I have just migrated Cubase from a Windows 7 to a new Windows 10 machine (both in 64bit mode). My MOXF8 was previously working correctly on the old machine but I have had a lot of problems getting it to talk to the new one.
I have reinstalled Cubase AI8 and the Remote Tools, and have installed the latest USB driver (several times!). However when I start Cubase with my MOXF8 connected and select one of the MOXF templates I get an error - 'The plug-in 'MOXF6/MOXF8 VST could not be found for VST Synth 1'.
The MOXF8 shows up in the VST instrument window but if I click on it I get a message that no parameters are available. It also follows that I can't open the MOXF editor that shows all of the parts on their respective midi tracks. The plug-in manager is only showing Halion and not the MOXF8.
I believe I have configured all of the ports correctly as I had this working on the Windows 7 PC. The correct ports are showing as active and USB is selected as the driver.
I am able to record midi from the MOXF8 and play it back so the connection is there, but interestingly only on Channel 1 even though 'Part' is set to on.
Selecting the various Quick Setups on the MOXF doesn't help.
I have just updated the firmware on the MOXF but it hasn't made any difference.
I can't decide if the problem is with Cubase (or more likely the remote tools and editor) or with the MOXF8.
Does anyone have any ideas as I am now stumped!
From what you describe it is a Cubase issue. You may need to rescan or refresh your VST Instruments. Since the problems you report are consistent (mostly) with Cubase not finding the VST information for the Yamaha MOXF6/MOXF8 VST.
If this is not found, none of the Quick Setup templates will work.
The driver is fine because you report you can record (that bit about only Channel 1 makes no sense though - we'll have to come back to that as a separate issue). Do not keep reinstalling the driver, it doesn't do anything and just adds to the frustration. You can definitively check that it installed, if not installed properly, you would not be able to record.
The issue appears to be with the Plug-in Information. Please go to DEVICES > PLUG-IN INFORMATION
Look under the "Program Plug-ins" Tab. You are looking for "Yamaha MOXF6/MOXF8 Editor VST Assistant" and "Yamaha MOXF6/MOXF8 Extension"
If they do not appear, go to DEVICES > PLUG-IN MANAGER > select the VST INSTRUMENTS tab... toward the bottom of the screen is an area for "Plug-in Information" click on the "i" (Update Information for All Plug-ins). This should rescan for missing Plug-ins.
Let us know.
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!
Under the Program Plug-ins I can see the MOXF6/MOXF8 Extension but not the Editor VST Assistant.
I went to the plug in manager and rescanned and found 1 new plug-in - namely the MOXF6/MOXF8 which I added. However when I restart Cubase it is no longer there and I still get the same error when I start up - namely that the MOXF6/8 VST can't be found.
I don't know if this is relevant but I can only see a VST 2.x plug-in listed under plug-in information but I thought the MOXF used VST 3?
From what you have suggested it does seem like it could be a problem with where Cubase is looking for the plug-ins but I have used all of the default settings for the installations so the paths should be correct.
I take your point about not reinstalling the drivers but I noticed when I started everything up today that I now have 2 drivers from Steinberg Yamaha - namely 'USB Audio' but also a 'USB Composite Device' which I'm sure was not there before. The USB Audio now currently showing an error Code 10 - cannot start, while the Composite driver looks ok. I suspect I will need to reinstall but will hold off doing that until you get back to me in case there is another approach.
Perhaps I should also mention that there are two other audio drivers listed but which I have disabled / uninstalled in case they were causing a problem - namely IDT High Definition Audio CODEC and NVIDIA High Definition Audio.
There is no need to concern yourself with any other driver... meaning you should not have disable or uninstall any of them - they will not interfere with the Yamaha Steinberg USB driver (and in spite of your insistence that the other driver wasn't there before, we are absolutely sure it was, but since it does not matter we will not belabor the point).
The VST 2.x list does not concern the MOXF6/MOXF8 VST, which is VST3.
Under the Program Plug-ins I can see the MOXF6/MOXF8 Extension but not the Editor VST Assistant.
You need the "MOXF6/MOXF8 VST Assistant" for the Editor to work.
I went to the plug in manager and rescanned and found 1 new plug-in - namely the MOXF6/MOXF8 which I added. However when I restart Cubase it is no longer there and I still get the same error when I start up - namely that the MOXF6/8 VST can't be found.
What do you mean it is no longer there....? No longer where, under "Program Plug-ins" or on the "Plug-in Manager screen". What about the listing for the VST Assistant?
Please provide exact information, you say it found 1 new plug-in, the MOXF6/MOXF8, what info (i) did it supply - please tell us. The info is important in troubleshooting this... it's the only way we can know what you are dealing with...
In the meantime download and install the following "Yamaha MOXF6/MOXF8 Editor Standalone/VST version 1.6.3 for Windows"
Please look carefully for that particular item and version.
Let us know.
So you are saying that both Yamaha Steinberg drivers should be showing up in the Windows device list, but the USB Audio driver still has an error on it - surely that is not right?
I will look at the other points and get back to you shortly
Thanks
I have installed the standalone editor and now things are looking much more promising. The error message at startup has gone away and the MOXF8 is showing up as a VST instrument. The editor page comes up as expected.
However at the moment the link to the MOXF8 doesn't appear to be working at all. There is only the GS wavetable synth showing in the Midi Port Setup and only simulated ports in the VST connections.
So my instinct is that there must be a problem with the driver?? It still has an exclamation mark against it saying that it cannot start.
But overall this is looking so much better than it was yesterday - thanks so much for your help with this - I was on the point of giving up and migrating back to the old machine!!
I believe everything is working ok now!!
In the end I did go ahead and reinstall the USB driver as I thought it may have got corrupted with all of the changes going on around it and it has now started and stayed up so far.
All of the connections between the MOXF and Cubase appear to be in place and working, so right now I am feeling very positive.
Next step is to try and migrate my old projects over - along with their associated VST instruments - so I can foresee more problems there but the main thing is that it is now up and running on the new machine and I am ready to start recording again!
Thanks again 🙂
Geoff
Cool!
