Hi, I have been researching the best way to use my motif XF8 and MOXS 7 keyboards in Studio One 5 using the vst editor (version of the hardware). Everything is set up properly. I am getting midi signals and everything. However, I saw a post where Bad Mister explained how to set up the VSTi setup to set the output of the sound played from the hardware. I have been trying forever to get that to work with no success. I can't find the vsti set up option when I open the Editor in Studio One. Can someone please explain with step by step instructions on how to get that accomplished. I am on Windows 10 x64 using Presonus VSL 1818 as my interface. i am not sure if the VSTi set up feature is only available on Cubase. I just can't find it via the file drop down menu in studio one.

In order to use the “Motif XS Editor VST” you must launch the software as a plugin inside of the DAW.

Your screenshots show the Motif XS Editor Standalone” — which means you did not launch the software *inside* of your DAW. To see the VSTi Setup option, you need to launch the Editor as a plugin (not as a separate ‘standalone’’ program). Running it as a standalone will allow you to communicate with the XS for MIDI, but you have no way to return Audio — which is what you’ll need to do to setup the VSTi

Sorry, I don’t know exactly where to click in Studio One but this is the reason you don’t see the “VSTi Setup” option.

Also it is not clear you have the right product... you mention a MOTIF XF, you posted in the MOXF Forum, and you mention a MOXS 7 (no such synth ever existed) ... we’ll assume you mean Motif XS 7... Since it appears “Online”. Is that correct?

The Editor should show up as a VST3 External Device.

Close the Editor you have open... research your Studio One documentation on how to launch VSTi plugins... look for the “Motif XS VST” and set it up similar to how you’d launch any soft synth...

Bad Mister,

I really appreciate the prompt response. By the way, I am using the editor as a plugin within Studio One per the screenshots above. I did not double click the icon from the desktop nor did I select it from the programs menu. I am very well aware of the difference between using it as a standalone application or as a plugin:) . I made a mistake regarding the MOXS 7 product mentioned above. Please note that I own the MOTIF XS 7 and the MOXF8. I have been trying to use the editor of the MOTIF XS 7 as a plugin inside Studio One but could never get to see the VSTi setup from the file submenu. As you can see from the screenshot, the VSTi Setup is not available. I have also tried the MOXF8 editor and got the same results. It only shows the set up option, not the VSTi setup option. The screenshot above was taken using the MOTIF XS editor. Also keep in mind that I am using the latest drivers and software. I would like to know the steps to get the vsti set up to show from the file menu in Studio One. I have been using Studio One for since version 2 ( at least 8 years). I am fully aware of how to open a vsti in that DAW.:) I am able to open other VSTi plugins and use my MOTIF XS as a controller. It's just a matter of getting the vsti set up to display from the file submenu instead of just seeing the setup option.

Thank you,

Okay, thanks for the clarification. I searched and found this post from 7 years ago... from an end user who cobbled it all together and attached a pdf on what the pitfalls might be. If you’re a longtime Studio One user it will probably make sense ... please get back to us either way. The poster, Andy M, was using the MOX Editor VST which should work exactly as the Motif XS Editor VST.

Let us know

Just FYI
The Motif XS and the MOXF use different Drivers... with a company like Yamaha (that makes so many products that use Drivers) it is important to not just search the latest... but the latest for your particular product. You obviously have the correct driver for the Motif XS because the software is Online.

The Motif XS uses either the “Yamaha USB-MIDI Driver“ or the “Yamaha Steinberg FW Driver“
The MOXF uses the “Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver“

Bad Mister,

Thank you again! I have found an alternative. I purchased and downloaded the latest version of Studio One which is version 5; it has a new feature that allows me to circumvent the process of using the yamaha vsti as a plugin. In fact, I can use any keyboard or external gear I have as a plugin. It includes part of the set up that the pdf file has and will work for any gear that can produce midi. Once the midi track is created, you then route the track to another track during the configuration process detailed in the pdf. It works flawlessly. This is the reason I love Studio One. Now I can finally use both of my Yamaha keyz as plugins while bypassing the vsti editor option.

I really appreciate the time you took to find the pdf file. You are indeed Bad Mister!

Sincerely,
