HI,
I have been doing my recordings into Cubase using the 2 Stereo Channel setting on my MOXF and on Cubase. When I open Cubase in the 2 Stereo Channel setting it appears there are two blue lines responding (going up and down) in the indicator for "midi input" on the upper right when I play something. When I go to record, (hit red record button and it starts recording) though, the two lines in the "midi input" indicator (again upper right on Transport) show just one line going up and down and when playing back, again, it is only one line, the two lines indicating Stereo disappear and just one shows. I was always assuming since I have the keyboard set to 2 Stereo Channel and the same on Cubase when I open it my recording was in stereo. When I was playing back the Voice "Journey" (an electric piano voice)I noticed the pulsing back and forth from right to left channel effect heard when playing live has disappeared in the Cubase playback. This made me realize it seems I am just getting a mono signal from the track playing back.
So, how do I keep both channels going and the recording comes out in stereo? THANKS for any help on this .....
MIDI is neither mono nor stereo... MIDI data is just coded messages that represent the music. Think of MIDI data as the roll of paper that goes into the Player Piano... it is not sound, it is not music, it is a representation of music. Same as notation, represents music.
So the MIDI ACTIVITY meter you see is a single bar... because it only indicates that MIDI data is being received or is being transmitted. It is not MONO nor is it STEREO... when that MIDI data triggers the MOXF tone engine the sound that it triggers can be either MONO or STEREO... because this is actual "audio".
We have several tutorials here on Yamaha Synth that take you through recording to Cubase using your MOXF. We highly recommend that you follow them - they will take you through basic audio recording in three steps (Part I, II, and III), then introduce you to MIDI recording.
Start here, if you get stuck post back to this thread:
Thanks - the player piano analogy makes sense as it confirms the "playback of the midi data" becomes the actual audio. The "Journey" voice when played back from mid through the MOFX loses the stereo effect of pulsing back and forth from right and left channels, though, so could there be something in the MOXF set up causing this? I ask because I also had the piece with this voice recorded on an digital recorder at the same time I was recording it as midi via Cubase and this analog sound has the "pulsing" as played originally. Any input will be appreciated although I will certainly review the "thread" you referenced. In GRATITUDE ....
The "Journey" Voice is indeed in stereo. You must create a Stereo Track in Cubase in order to record this properly. The issue could be how you have setup Cubase to record. The article will take you through the proper way to setup.
