Transpose and Note Shift

I have a MOXF 8 and I'm using song/pattern mode to assemble multiple sounds that I want to play. Ive attached a midi cable out from a Yamaha EX5 to the midi In on my MOXF. I put the EX5 in Song Mode and I'm able to play all of the sounds independently on each board, Power Grand on MOXF and Sweet Flute on EX5.

My problem is when I use the dedicated transpose buttons on the MOXF up or down the EX5 does not change. But when I go into Utility and use Note Shift both the MOXF and EX5 will change.

It's much easier for me to use the dedicated transpose buttons instead of leaving Song mode then going to Utility then Note Shift.

My question is can I use my dedicated transpose buttons, if so what do I need to change or am I stuck with using Note Shift?

Thanks.

Here is what you need to know. Yamaha terminology makes a differentiation between the two functions: TRANSPOSE and NOTE SHIFT.

While in a common conversation these might be used interchangeably- but Yamaha makes the following differentiation....

TRANSPOSE is a function of the transmitting device
NOTE SHIFT is a function of the receiving device.

When you change the Transpose it changes what Note number is transmitted.
When you change the Note Shift you change how the incoming data is interpreted.

Transpose is a function of the KEYBOARD.
Note Shift is a function of the TONE GENERATOR.

Transpose travels OUT via MIDI
Note Shift does not (it is local to the tone generator device)

If the MOXF's MIDI Out is not connected to anything, transposing it will only affect the MOXF
If the EX5 is the Master transposing it will Transpose both itself and how the Slave device sound. It does not change the relationship between the MOXF and its own tone engine.

It's that simple and that complex.
