Hello, I ordered a 512MB flash expansion board for my MOXF8 (I could only afford the small card at this time) and I am confused about loading sound libraries . For now, I only plan to load the "Inspiration In A Flash" and maybe the "CP1 Pianos" libraries (if they both fit on this card) but the install in? I thought those were dedicated areas for creating sequenced user recordings? If it does overwrite these banks, will these added sound libraries now permanently occupy all of the available 64 User Song banks and 64 User Pattern banks rendering them unavailable for any future recording? I'm confused. Thank you,

... For some reason my last question was truncated?? I was wondering why the instructions for loading sound libraries on a flash card state this will overwrite ALL User files (Songs, Patterns, etc.) and I don't understand that. Will those Song and Pattern user banks no longer be available for making recordings by the user? Are they now permanently populated by the voice libraries? Thanks again

If you load a File Type .X6A called an "ALL" data file, yes it replaces all the data in your User MOXF's memory
If you load a File Type .X6V called an "ALL VOICE" file, it replaces all the User Voices you have in memory
If you select FILE TYPE = "voice" you can 'open' either a .X6A or .X6V file and select a single voice to load
If you select FILE TYPE = "1Bank Voice" you can 'open' either a .X6A or .X6V and select a single Bank to load

So you have to spend time learning how to LOAD data. This way you can assemble just the data that you want. "All" means all, it's that simple. If you don't want to overwrite everything in your internal you must choose a different TYPE of load function.

When you are dealing with Flash Boards, only the custom audio data (Waveforms/Samples) is written to the Flash Board; it is this data that is used to create the OSCILLATOR sound source; the Voices that use this data are loaded to the internal USER 1, 2, 3 and User Drum Banks.

The audio data can be HUGE in size... While the Voice data is very tiny in size, by comparison. Once you have installed the HUGE audio data to the Flash Board, your MOXF creates a "catalog" called the Waveform List that documents exactly where each of your 384 User Voices and 32 Drum Kit Voices need to look to find its audio (oscillator) and it updates each and every Voice it loads to reflect your custom configuration.

Only Waveforms and Samples are installed on the Flash Board. You will be able to assemble just the data you need. The thing is, yes it is a lot of work, but you only do it once... Then you will have all the data you require in place when you power on your MOXF.

Please see the following article from the MOXF RESOURCES area here on Yamaha Synth... If you have specific questions post back here

MOXF Flash Board

Thank you Badmister. Good to find you again, I was wondering where you ended up since I haven't seen any posts from you lately on the Motifator board. ; )

I appreciate the information. Another question that pops up is; if I just want to load a particular voice or two from a library to the flash module, will it automatically also load the associated files to the keyboard that pertain to that particular voice (oscillators, etc.). Is it possible that some of those associated files are already on the keyboard and does it know that or does it tell you to select and load those as well? I haven't received the card yet so I'm kind of asking questions blindly at this point.

Yes, the MOXF automatically installs the Waveforms and Samples to Flash, while directing the other Voice data to the internal location you choose.

Is it possible that some of those associated files are already on the keyboard and does it know that or does it tell you to select and load those as well?

It automatically keeps track of Waveforms and Samples are already loaded from a particular source file. So that if 10 Voices use the same data, even if you load the Voices individually, it will only load the Waveform and Samples once.

Awesome that is very helpful. Okay I have one last question (for today at least, I promise). Is there anyway or any place to hear the samples of the voices in a particular library without having to load them them completely on the MOXF first? Anyone have these posted on YouTube or anywhere else perhaps that you are aware of? Thank you again Bad Mister.

No. It's like asking is there anyway to know how the steak tastes without ordering it! 🙂 even if there were audio demos, you'd want to load and play them.

Suggestion: when you get a library load it all, play it for several days, make notes about which Voices you really like. Write them down.

Format your Board, load just the data you wrote down, using the load "voice" or load "1Bank Voice" routine.
Then make your Backup ALL data file of your work.

Flash assembly is time consuming and should only be done when you have time, and it requires patience - the work you do will serve well and save you literally tons of hours of wait time in the long term.

Thank you sir. I'm looking forward to giving it a go. I had a bit of a learning curve when I first got the MOXF8 a couple years ago and I remember how patient and helpful you were in responding to all my rants of how frustrated I was. I really appreciated your assistance then and I still do now. Have a great day. ; )
