Can I connect my Akai EWI usb wind controller directly into my mx49 and utilize its sounds? If so, how would I go about it?

Sorry, I don't know anything about the Akai.

The MX does MIDI IN via the 5-pin MIDI jack. Unless you connect to a computer the USB port is not going to work - USB-MIDI IN is from a computer only. (I can't imagine the Akai works without a computer either via USB). You should contact Akai.

You could use a Kenton MIDI USB Host (see www.kenton.co.uk) to convert the EWI USB's USB Type-B output to standard 5-pin MIDI DIN, and then connect that to the MX. A DIY MIDI Host Board (see www.hobbytronics.co.uk/) will also do this for a lot less money, but you'll have do some electronic connection / enclosure work yourself.
