I have noticed on some factory and even some user performances, that the drum channel 10 insert effect is not on, even when it apears to be on.
I havent exceeded the 4 insert effect limit for the 16 channels.

Have referenced the manual and the pdf manuals but i cannot figure out why drum midi channel 10 doesnt have insert effect on some performances.
Its probably something simple but i cannot figure it out.

Many thanks to anyone that might have info on this subject.

The programming is to point out typical use case. Just because there are 4 Parts that can use Insert Effects does not mean you have to use all four. The Insertion Effect should be thought of as a specialty Effect belonging exclusively to that instrument. A guitar player's Distortion, an organist's Rotary Speaker. But the Acoustic Piano, the Acoustic Guitar, a flute, sax, trumpet, etc, may not require an Insert Effect at all.

Certainly, Drum Kits don't often require a specialty Effect... maybe if it is Distortion Drums, or the compressed Kit... Normally, like many other instruments, no special Insertion Effect is necessary. When creating your own Performances, since there are but four Parts that can recall Insert Effects, choose wisely.

Thanks for the reply Bad Mister,

I guess im not getting it.
I tried to add an insert effect to drum channel 10, without any other insert effects enabled on any other midi channels within the performance, and still no insert effect on drums channel 10.
Some performances will let me put insert effect on drum channel 10, and some performances wont.
Is it that some drum kits will not allow an insert effect in a performance?

Sorry i sound like a dum dum.

No, no, not at all. Your observation is spot on... here is what is going on. As you may know, the design concept of the MX was to make a light-weight music synthesizer line based on the Motif-series sound Library.

While the Motif-series was based on an AWM2 sample based soundset. The Voice architecture featured 8 oscillators (Elements) per Voice. The Motif featured an Integrated Sampler-Sequencer. The MOXF-series, still a workstation (sequencer) but no sampler - but fully compatible with the MOTIF XF sample waveforms. The MX-series (49, 61, and 88) is based on the same 8 Element, AWM2 sample based engine as its two bigger, heavier, more expensive siblings... and while no sampling or sequencing on board, you do get a Library of sound based on selected Waveforms from its relatives.

The front panel of the MX only allows access to this AWM2 Synth engine to a point. But what I personally love about how MX is constructed, even though the MX is an abbrievated Motif/MOXF, what they chose to change does not cripple the MX. Although you cannot drop down to the individual Element level of editing from the front panel... they allow you access to the engine via System Exclusive...

What that means is they left it open to access to an external Editor. We have a few articles, here on YamahaSynth, that take you into the MX Editor Suite (by third party programmer, John Melas). The routing within Yamaha's AWM2 Synth engine, you have *normal* Voices and you have *drum kit* Voices. Normal Voices can have 8 Elements... a Drum Kit Voice can have 73 Elements.

A Element is a set of parameters that includes a Waveform, Filter, Amplifier, etc...each Element in an AWM2 Voice can be routed independently to an Insert Effect, when available. Yes, an individual Drum can be routed to an Insertion Effect when it is assigned to the Kit.

On the MOXF, or Motif XF front panel, you can simply drop all the way down to the individual Element routing level of the architecture.
On the MX, you can also do this, but you need to do so via Editor software.

Why I personally like this... so many times when designing the cost-down versions, company's can sometime gut the instrument - killing some of the real charm and magic. This is not the case here. Quick and easy functioning is available from the front panel screen, but for those that want to dive in deeper, you don't get punished, because its there and accessible. The Editor let's you dive in and dive down to the individual Element routing level of the architecture. So cool!

As I mentioned, if see a Kit with a name that would tip off it is using an Insert Effect, "DistrtdKit" for example... some of the drums are routed as a part of that Preset kit. The principal drums in any kit are Kick C1, Snare D1, Hihats F#1/G#1/A#1, Toms D2/C2/B1/A1/G1/F1, you may find that these have already been routed to the Insert Effect. Probably not the Kick and Hihats but the snare and toms... You get to choose on a per Drum Key basis what gets routed where...

You cannot get at that level of editing via the front panel, but you can with the Melas Voice Editor, in this case the Drum Editor. The Melas Suite includes "Total Librarian", "Performance Editor", "Voice Editor", and "Drum Editor"... shown below we are looking at the individual snare Drum on "E1" - it has its own Volume (Amp Level), Pan, Filter, Amplitude Envelope Generator, etc., etc... all the parameters are per Drum Key Element. Notice in the lower right corner this particular Drum is being routed to the Kit's assigned Insert Effect ("ins").... you can send as many of the 73 Kit Elements to the Insert Effect or not ("thru").

This is from the "Distrtd Kit" - Only the selected Drum Keys are routed to the INS Effect (which is an "Amp Simulator") - Those not set to "ins" will be set to THRU which will send them Through to the SYSTEM Reverb and Chorus processors. If you want to dig in and really get at the full power of the MX engine. I highly recommend the John Melas MX Suite

Thank you very much Bad Mister,
Your the best.
I completely get it now.

The melas editor looks super cool!
I downloaded the demo of it.
Going to purchase the drum editor.

The other editors look super cool too, may have to get them a little down the road.
I love that the MX, with the melas editors will go super deep as a synth.
Although i must say, the MX sounds so darn good, i mostly just lightly tweek the sounds from the ADSR front panel,or tweek the effects.
I know i sound like a broken record when i say, the MX synths are the best.
When i think of what i paid for this little monster, i have to smile.:)
