Performance Mix Levels

hi there,

I play in a band and typically play bass on the left hand and pads/piano//leads etc. in the right hand.

I do this by either creating the split just before the song (i.e. live on stage) or where I want to use several sounds in a song, I create a performance and put the different sections onto different midi channels - so I can change parts during the song - and I also use the range feature to create splits.

The problem which I seem to have sometimes is that if I set up a performance in my room at home, the mix or balance of the perfromance sounds good there, however when I go to the band rehearsal or gig, the bass (left hand) and right hand parts in the split may not seem to be as well mixed or balanced.

It seems easier to just create a split on the spot as you can change the levels of parts1 and 2 on the keyboard whereas for perfromance splits using the note range feature the relative volumes of the different sounds cannot be adjusted becuse the part volume control effectively conytrols the midi channel sound level.

However some songs you really need layers and sound changes throughout the song and, as you don't have time when playing live to change sounds, creating a performance is necessary.

I am just wondering if there is any way or any suggestions to help with this, as I am thinking maybe I need to buy a second keyboard in order to effectively and easily balance my left hand bass parts with my right hand parts as the mix requirements can vary depend on the room you're playing in.

Am i right that a keyboard like the MOXF might do this better as you can balance the mix of a perfromance live on the front panel?

So effectively I could overcome this probelm with a second keyboard or a MOXF - or is there same way to do this on the MX?

cheers

David

While there is a Volume that sets the overall volume of Parts 1 and 2 together (page 46 in the Reference Manual), there is also a parameter that lets you set each Part's Volume independently (see page 47).

Thanks Bad Sir

I tried this, however this does not allow individual control of parts if I layer parts on the one midi channel - as I tend to do.

I might use for part 1 of the performance a bass part with the note range set to to the lower half of the keyboard and then a couple of other parts layered for the top half of the keyboard and then set all these parts to Midi Channel 1. This seems to in effect make all the parts "Part 1".

I then have another section of the song set up with a bass and two other right hand parts, set to Midi Chaneel 2 so I can hit the part select for different sections of the song and have different groups of voices in different sections of the song.

However I can't see that you can individually change the voice mix once you have put them on the same midi channel.

Do you know what I mean / have any suggestions?

Each individual Part has its own contributing Volume parameter setting. So the right hand sounds that make up your Channel 1 sound, for example, each of those Parts has its own Part Volume. You can change that Part Volume directly to create the balance between layered sounds you require. If you then use cc011 Expression the relative volumes on that channel will change *in proportion* to the way you set them up. (If however, you use cc007 Main channel volume, then the proportional relationship goes out the window, all volumes jump to the same value setting). That's the difference between cc011 and cc007.

But you need to navigate to each Part, and find the Part Volume setting; it can be set independently for each Part -even though it shares the channel with other Parts.

Thanks Bad Mister,

I had hit the Part 2 button and since I couldn't here anything (I had no parts on Channel 2) I thought I could therefore not control part 2 volume, however I realise now I can adjust the volume - I just need to go back to Channel 1 to hear the change...

The VycroMX program layout certainly suggested that this could be done - thanks for your patience.
