To unlock the FM ESSENTIAL app you need to connect to a new MX49/MX61 BK/BU/WH or MX88. This will unlock the app permanently. In order to bring the MX series into full audio compatibility with iOS devices required new hardware (not just a firmware update).

The original MX (2012) did not have the same hardware as the new MX49/MX61 BK/BU/WH (2016) and 88 (2017) which have full audio/MIDI class compliant compatibility with iOS.

Thank you very much for the information provided. I believe I may also pass through the Ipad FM Essential audio out either through the mixer or through the Aux In of the MX49 itself.
Now the problem is that our only Malta local Yamaha store does NOT have any of the latest MX range of keyboards and the only one that should be available is a customer's ordered unit MX88. So I really am very disappointed that while I have purchased an earlier MX49 model which does not have the latest features, I am also unable to activate a free software like those owning later ones. That is exactly like rubbing salt to a wound and quite annoying for the fact that I thought that buying a Yamaha is a serious brand that would not let me down - wrong!. While I appreciate your prompt reply and support, in view of the circumstances, I am still stuck with an old keyboard and a software that will not run fully due to some cheesy scheme to pop down to the local store to....what?...be let down! I really look forward to seeing a solution to cases like mine ie. with no options at all but to keep hoping or give up and shift to other brands. While i admit that this FM E software is not the holy grail, my situation reflects a shortcoming at your marketing department and is back-firing rather than promoting further sales.

Sorry, the US promotion doesn't work for you in Malta. I don't doubt your frustration. The promotion here may not make sense for you, sorry but there is really not much I can do about that.
