Hi, I used the MX88 and I am wondering whether it's possible to send my favorite sound to the top of its category? I can't find much in the manual.
Also I've been try to assign a trigger functions to the After touch but it does not let me. It just show
AT--
Am I doing something wrong or is it not practical?
Each MX88 Performance can have 16 Voices one assigned to each of the 16 numbered buttons.
You can place your Favorite Voices on these 16 buttons and access them when the [PART SELECT] button is lit.
If, for example, you recall Performance 001 MX Category... then press the [PART SELECT] button you will now be able to access and switch seamlessly between the Parts using buttons [1]~[16]. Each of the 128 Performances can hold 16 Voices in this manner. So when you need several sounds on stage ... say you need piano, organ, synth lead and brass, you can put them in Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4 and use the PART SELECT buttons to switch between them.
Please note: you are not accessing “Categories”, but Parts. The [PART SELECT] button, is connected to the numbers 1-16 (under the buttons) which are the PARTS. You can place a sound from any Category in these Parts.
While the MX tone generator can respond to Aftertouch, the MX Keyboard does not generate Aftertouch.
FINALLY! I've been looking for this answer! Now for my question. How do you assign the voices to those parts? Example, I want concert grand, organ and strings on parts 1-3 of performance 001 mx category, what are the steps to do that. seriously considering purchasing one if this step is simple. Could you help me with that Bad Mister?
Find an additional reason (like you like the sound and feel of the action) if you buy based on your ability to work something you’ve never encountered before, you might wind up buying a “dumber” product, buy one that sounds and feels good. Assume your smart enough to LEARN how to work it (unless reading and learning is a major issue).
There are a couple of skills pointed out in the Owner’s Manual, that will make finding the sounds you like, easy. The first skill is using “Category Search”
The Categories are written above the right front panel buttons. Piano, Keyboards, Organs, etc., etc. and they are represented in the screen by the two letter prefix AP for Acoustic Pianos, KB for Keyboards, OR for Organs, etc. When the cursor arrow is next to a Category you can use the Category buttons to select a search category
The second skill is working the [PART SELECT] button, when you press this button the right front panel buttons are *numbers* 1-16 (written underneath the sixteen buttons). Now pressing a button lets you select a Part 1, 2, 3, etc
Select the PART, by number: press [PART SELECT], press [1]
Choose a Voice for Part 1 using Category Search
You want Concert Grand, Select AP (acoustic Piano)
Select the next PART, by number, [PART SELECT], press [2]
Choose the next Voice for the second Part using Category Search
You want an Organ, Select OR (Organs) as your Category
Using the INC button or by repeated hitting the OR Category button select an organ sound
Select [PART SELECT], press [3]
Choose the Voice for the third Part using Category Search
You want Strings, press the Strings Category button (ST)
Using the INC button or hitting the ST button select your favorite String sound
Rinse and repeat for each of the 16 Parts in the Performance
Name and the STORE your Performance.
Now since you don’t own one yet, you can't know just how simple this is... But you should really find an additional reason to like the MX88.
Anyone can operate the front panel within minutes of owning it.
Thank you for your response, I recently purchased a moxf8 for myself and understand the category search features that Yamaha uses. I guess I should have explained that one. I just couldn't find any info on storing sounds for quick selections on the mx88. I am considering having my church purchase this as we don't need all the "extras" that a moxf has such as sequencer and other things. Again, thanks for the response it helps tremendously.

I've been searching for help with this. I tried what I "thought" you said but I must be doing something wrong.
For some reason, I was able to get the first two parts to work but when I tried to add a BASS sound for part three, I pressed the BASS category and it changed to the "5th" part. I've tried this repeatedly and keep getting stuck at this point.
I hope you can help me with this. I've used other Yamaha synths in the past (DX7, SY77, TG-77) but this one has me baffled.
Thanks in advance!
