This seems like a dream come true. Once I've got my hands on one, I'll really be itching for MPE support from Yamaha!

Me too! I pre-ordered the Osmose a week ago. Have you tried the Camelot Pro approach to MPE on Montage? I'm going to try it today with my Roli.

I haven't tried that particular arrangement, but I have played with the combination of GeoShred Control (an iOS MPE controller) and my Motif XS. GeoShred has the internal capability to output MIDI with one-note-per-channel as a sort of "poor man's MPE". I find it works well with the Motif XS with two rather large caveats:

  • You need to one-by-one copy the part which you intend to play, up to 16 times or however much polyphony you want. If you edit a parameter, you need to then copy the edited part however many times all over again. I reached out to John Melas about implementing the ability to batch-copy one part to multiple destination parts, or better yet to edit multiple parts in unison simultaneously. He agreed it was a good idea but this was close to a year ago and I don't know if it's in his development pipeline.
  • The Motif XS seems to start running out of MIDI bandwidth after around 5 or 6 simultaneous notes coming from GeoShred if I recall correctly. The Montage might or might not have more bandwidth to accommodate this sort of hacked-together MPE. A proper MPE implementation by Yamaha should solve this issue, but given the current issues with smooth pitch bend it may be a bigger job than I would first think.

I tried the Camelot Pro approach to MPE... and gave up. First I had problems trying to update the list of Montage presets in Camelot.. at first it seemed to work, but then I found a lot of presets were assigned the same name in Camelot but, when I clicked on them, they showed up as different presets when loaded on the Montage.... and, after trying some VSTs, the Montage preset names that initially looked correct in Camelot changed to be the same name. I also was unable to get it to automatically create multiple copies of voices for MPE support... each with different MIDI channels. I see this being done in a YouTube video... but I couldn't get this to happen. I was able to get Camelot to work with VST Instruments, but I couldn't find any way to load effects plug-ins (which I typically use) ... at this point I gave up on Camelot. Given some its apparent limitations (no effects plug-ins, strictly for live use ... not for DAW recording), I don't think Camelot would be a viable solution for me, even if I had got it to work with MPE/Montage multi-voice setup.

As I've previously stated in this forum ... I find the current MPE approach supported in Montage (copying parts & editing them one by one) is not worth the effort. I hope Yamaha is working on firmware enhancement that will provide a proper MPE implementation ... i.e. full featured, simple to use and reliable. If not, I don't see a lot of use for my Montage in the future... especially after I get my Osmose.
