Yamaha Product Registration Wrongfully and Probably Illegally Requires Personal Financial Information To Register Products

I received an email from Yamaha this past week offering to extend my warranty on a MG10XU for an additional year. I realized I had not registered this product so I went to the Yamaha product registration webpage at https://www.yamaha.com/ussub/productregistration..... and in order to complete the application to register the unit I was required to answer very personal financial questions which included my income and whether I rent or own a home. That is none of Yamaha's business. There was no "decline to answer" option. If I spend significant amounts of money buying Yamaha products and need to register them for warranty service, where does Yamaha get off requiring me to provide personal financial information that has absolutely nothing to do with when and from whom I purchased their product in order to register it. Check it out yourself. This has to be corrected.

I have a few Yamaha products registered and as I've had stuff stolen before I really did want to register them and I think I just went through this process without thinking about it (it was late at night too which is when I get the time to do this stuff and I was probably half asleep as well) but now that you've raised it Earle - yes I think it needs to be addressed. Fair enough if they want to do some sort of market survey but this shouldn't be conditional on registering products. While this is a new (internet age) service for the benefit of customers I think it is of benefit to Yamaha as they want to have a Yamaha community - not just a source of marketing information.

Hi Earle,

The factory warranty is in force regardless of whether or not you register your MG10XU. Failure to register will not diminish your factory warranty rights. The promotion in question was to provide an additional year of warranty to those customers who purchased the product during the promotional period and were willing to register their product. The questions regarding income are included to allow Yamaha to obtain demographic data corresponding to our customer base. Yamaha is not interested in how much you make, but how much our average customer that purchases this product makes. The same is true of all the questions; they are averaged with all of the registrations for various product groups to obtain average data. No one has time, or is interested in looking at one product registration. The more information we can obtain, the better we can target our products and offerings to meet the needs of those who purchase various Yamaha products.

Sorry for the late response. I have not reviewed this thread for awhile until this morning.

I recognize that a warranty under California law is valid without registration, but my point was that to obtain the bonus, the extended warranty benefit, and future tech support, I am required to disclose highly personal private financial information and place it in a corporation's database for review by anyone with access, or to hackers or to anyone who might subpoena these records. Although I don't have to register a product for the warranty, in the past registering the product has been required for tech support. When I phoned Yamaha for tech support, the representative always looked me up in a database before assisting me. How do I get into your database without providing this financial information if your on-line registration will not accept my registration without my providing the financial information. I guess I can call your phone number which I appreciate your providing.

Look at the practical side of the issue. This policy in essence states that no matter how much I spend on your next product, I will never qualify for a bonus product if I do not disclose my income. That is ridiculous. I have registered many, many products for warranty and bonuses and NO OTHER COMPANY has required the disclosure of income. It is always an optional question. Yamaha needs to change this policy. Further, I have purchased Yamaha products for over 30 years spent tens of thousands of dollars on your products. At check out no one ever asked me for a financial statement when they took my check or credit card.

Sure, your marketing department wants as many demographics as possible, but there is a limit as to what is reasonable to require a customer to disclose in order to register a product or receive a bonus. I also suggest there are significant California legal issues here that your marketing department may not have considered. Anyway, my issue is not about extending the warranty on the mixer. It works fine and I have found Yamaha products to be relatively bullet proof. But I like the music rack bonus I received for the CP4 and other bonuses in the past. It is absurd that in the future I can spend thousands of dollars on Yamaha products but not qualify for future bonuses if I do not want to disclose my income. Forget demographics and insert some common sense.

Issue Resolved. Glad to report and acknowledge that today I was able to register my MG10XU Mixer on line without having to provide any personal information. Although the information was requested, I was able to hit "Submit" without answering any of the "demographics" information and the registration was accepted. I am pleased to see this change and it resolves the issue I raised in my previous posts on this thread. Good to know this forum can have an impact on corporate policies. Thank you.
