Hi all,
I have a pretty simple goal. I'd like to connect a small knobs/faders controller like the Korg nanoKONTROL2 to the Reface DX so that I can control some of its parameters using external knobs.
Is this possible? The issue is that most of these small controllers only have USB out, not 5-pin MIDI. I've heard that because the Reface DX doesn't function as a USB host then plugging in a USB MIDI controller won't do anything. Would this require a USB-to-MIDI converter in the middle then?

Yes, you need a USB-to-MIDI convert, such as the Kenton USB MIDI Host (which I have tested) or the Mode Machines Cerebel USB (which I have not).
Problem is that this is an expensive way to connect an inexpensive controller. But it works.

A cheaper option is to use a Raspberry Pi as the USB host, plus an inexpensive USB-to-midi cable (the ones that have a rectangular USB plug on one end, and two 5-pin MIDI jacks (MIDI IN and MIDI OUT). This requires a bit more tinkering to set up, but once it's setup it just works - no need for the Raspberry Pi to be connected to a monitor, keyboard, or mouse. I set mine up so that when I unplug the USB controller (Korg microKEY) from the Raspberry Pi, this triggers the Raspberry Pi to shut down automatically.
