Hi,

Hope someone can help me. I was thinking of purchasing a reface as I love the sound of the CP/DX and wanted the portability. I was also about to purchase a small midi controller keyboard (irig keys pro) so that i can play soft synths i have purchased on my iPad.

Would the reface be able to control these soft synth as well? I could save some money if this is the case. If anyone already does this could you let me know what cables i would need and whether the reface touch sensitive keys would work on a soft synth as I would like it to be as expressive as possible. I'm mainly interested on how well the keys would respond as any sliders and knobs I can control on the touch screen.

Thanks for any help in advance

Hi,

The Reface does send Notes, Clock and CCs to the midi so you can control soft synth with it.
For the iPad you'll need the usb lightning adaptator and that's it.
The keyboard response is very nice.
Using the slider to control the soft synth work but it's not as useable as a dedicated midi controller because:
- you can only have 4 parameters to edit
- you'll probably need to remap the cc on your softsynth to match the one on the reface. Not a big deal but some may not allow remapping of their CCs

Great little keyboard and synth on the road with an iPad, I can tell you that. You can even get the output sound of the iPad in the Reface using the line input.

Hope it helps.

Hi Alan,

Thanks a lot for the reply. I was a little confused over whether the USB to camera connection was for backing up voices only so it's easier than buying a midi cable as I already have the connection kit. I was mainly interested in how well the touch sensitivity responded with the soft synths as I know the reface is very expressive and wanted to make sure that the great key response would also work on a soft synth.

I am not too intersted in controlling the soft synth parameters really, having an iPad next to the keyboard I would probably prefer to just use the touchscreen anyway as I'm used to where everything is. One thing I also wanted to ask though is does the reface octave slider work with the iPad over midi?

I'm not sure yet on whether to go for the CP or DX so I know i'd be loosing the ability to pitch slide with the CP as it doesn't have the control.

Thanks again

The octave slider does work over midi, as the pitch bend.
The only thing that is not transmitted is the volume slider (it seems it's just a amp volume slider and not a CC. The reface does however recongnize CC07 when received).
