Hello!

I am after a synth to use for psychedelic pop/rock. In the vein of Tame Impala, Flaming Lips, Pink Floyd etc.
I have tried both the DX and CS in shops. I like them both but am finding it hard to choose one.
It seems to me, maybe the DX has a more varied sound, but also slightly less ease of use or hands on friendly.
Also can the LFO be mapped to different features in the DX or is it restricted to only altering the feature that it defaults to? (i.e.. can I use DX LFO for pitch, volume, freq. etc?)

The refaceDX LFO can be assigned to Pitch (vibrato), or to Amplitude (tremolo), the FM engine does not have filters but you can assign the LFO to change the amplitude of a Modulator Operator which will affect the timbre change of the Carrier Operator it is set to modify.

Hi James -

I do not on the DX (yet 😉 ) but can give you some quick thoughts on the CS. First of all, I love this synth. You can make all kinds of terrific sounds with it. It's not a CS in terms of truly emulating a CS80, but you can get some really great sounds from that era if you dial it in.

Unfortunately, I'm only familiar with Pink Floyd in any depth, don't know much about Tame Impala or Flaming Lips. If it were based on Pink Floyd alone, I'd say the CS is more likely to create tones of that era. Here is an article about the keys used by Pink Floyd. http://sparebricks.fika.org/sbzine28/features.html#1 Digital FM synths like the DX are noticeably absent from the list.

Will you be playing this live? If so the CS has a major downfall. No patch memory. It's great for tweaking in real time, not great if you need to quickly move between patches mid song. An ipad or ipod touch will solve that issue. I'm also building my own small patch bank that will go with the synth, but as it comes out of the box, you are out of luck.

A lot of people will buy the CS and say it's not their thing. You really need to give it a couple of days, and hook it up to SoundMondo so you can become aware of what it can sound like. It is definitely one of my favorite synths, but it's not for everyone. Check it out and see what you think. Good luck!

Bob

If you have an iPad you can save patches on it from the CS and recall them at will.
