Use two FC7 to control the volume of two parts independently

I have two FC7 pedals, and I'm trying to control the volume of two parts independently, so that Foot Controller 1 controls the volume of Part 1 and Foot Controller 2 controls the volume of Part 2.

This is what I've done: under Utility -> Controller I've set both FC1 and FC2 Ctrl no = 11, then with a simple piano+strings performace, I've tried to make each part respond to a single foot controller, by setting the Foot Controller 1 (or 2) to on (or off) accordingly, under Edit -> Part 1 (or 2) -> Rcv Sw.

But without success. Even messing with the Expression setting in the same menu didn't bring what I wanted.

I want to achieve (it's on a CP4): Bruno Zucchetti on CP4
Is this supported on the S70/S90 XS?

Control Change 11 Expression will not work, because it has a "fixed" function... It will always control the relative volume of everything on the MIDI channel. You cannot get around this fact... Well not completely. So when your FC7 pedal is defaulting to cc011 you can either opt in (have it control the volume) or you can opt out (by setting the Part's RCV SW to Off) the Receive Switch can be turned Off for "Exp".

Just FYI: turning the RCV SW Off for FC1 and FC2 only works if they are not set to a fixed function.
We will set it ON and leave them there. We will not be using them in this setup. Leave FC1 On, FC2 On.

If you want to control two sounds, one with each FC7 here is what you must do
Control one of the Parts using cc011, set the other to ignore "Exp" (on the Receive Switch screen you will see Expression as one of the options)
Then program the one ignoring cc011, to follow cc004 [Foot Control] and assign Foot Control to directly control the "Volume" of the Voice. This programming will have to take place at the VOICE level. This means: You will need to setup this VOICE to respond to cc004, STORE the VOICE to a User location, then use this new User Voice in your Performance. This deeper level of programming will be respected when you place this Voice in a Part within your Performance.

It sounds like a lot, but it's really not. By preparing this Voice in VOICE mode, when it is used in your Performance it will respect your controller assignment!

Here's how:
Find the Voice you want to prepare for cc004 in Voice mode.
Press [EDIT]
Select "Play Mode"
Find VOLUME
Set the VOLUME = 0
This will mean that the we can now assign a minimum-to-maximum controller to control this parameter such that when the controller is at minimum position, the volume will be 0, and when the controller is applied the volume will increase towards maximum.
Press [EXIT] once to return to your edit options

Select "Controller"
You will want to set one of the six Control Sets found here as follows: as you scroll down you will see the various Source/Destination setups... There are six, if none is available pick one and change it!
_Source = FootCtrl2(04)
_Destination = Volume
_Depth = +32

As you play this sound now, you notice that position of your FC7 pedal plugged into the Foot Controller 2 jack will mimic the output level. Heel down will be zero volume, toe down will be maximum volume.

Press [STORE] and write this Voice into your User area (remember where you put it, you will need to use this in your Performance) you may want to rename this Voice so you recognize it.

Navigate to your Performance.
In Part 1 you have the sound that is set so RECEIVE SWITCH = ON for /Exp.
in Part 2 place your newly edited Part, set it so it ignores "Exp" by setting this RECEIVE SWITCH = OFF

PART 1 will follow the FC1 jack (cc011) while Part 2 ignores this message completely
PART 2 will follow the FC2 jack (cc004) which is specifically programmed within the Voice for direct Parameter control of its volume.

Background
cc004 Foot Control does not have a "fixed" function, it can be assigned to some 100 parameter Destinations.
cc011 is fixed - it always does Expression, no matter what.

Hope that helps. (Done from memory so hopefully I didn't forget something)! 🙂

Let me know.

Ok. This is exactly what I'm trying to do too. I want a piano on part 1 and then be able to fade in and out for strings (You're Still a Young Man). I called Yamaha support and he said to just assign FC 1 to part 1 and FC 2 to part 2 and that should be it. He didn't say anything about going to Utility and doing any thing there. What ever I did actually worked out better as my piano on part 1 didn't change volume at all with FC 1 but it didn't affect the volume of the strings so it was quite handy. FC 2 didn't activate anything. Now then, I went to recreate it in a different location and now I'm lost again, the accidental programming that I liked didn't happen and the FC 2 doesn't affect Part 2 unless FC1 is turned up too. Grrr. Not sure what the Expression switch operates or it's purpose.

PS. The manual doesn't cover any of this situation. Is there a DVD available like they did for the MOTIF series?
