Fascinating little piece - if someone looks for a small little groove box to jam out ideas and likes Yamaha sounds, definitely for the price a good recommendation (My MODX7 and an MC101 helped my through the pandemic).
It is a very powerful design, but unfortunately I keep finding myself trapped in the same situation over and over.
Here is my experience
- I start a new idea with a beat, bass line or some chord patterns
- I get very quickly to 2-3 patterns that are quite fun and cool ideas to built on
- Due to the lack of changing sounds / arp patterns - I try to start resampling tracks to free up synth, but that gets me only so far
So basically after 20-30min I start hitting the ceiling in adding new ideas to a project. Often I redo those ideas in my little music corner with my setup (MODX, MC707, Blofeld, SP404 (Guitar, Vocals)).
I get that some folks can do a full concert only with an TR909, but that is not my thing.
Now the SEQTRAK has a lot potential, because of it solid base (good workflow, no display, good sounds, lot of options) and there for the first 20-30min are always fun, but than getting back to the idea and built on on top if it, it is currently limited. My experience with the MC101 is that there I more often go back to old ideas and built them further out. Before I go and sit down. I wish the SeqTrak will improve in that matter, because I really like it.
With that in mind, I like to share a few thoughts, I really like Yamaha to look into and wonder if folks are having the same thoughts, or share same wishes (yes I know there is idea scale ;).
I find after 10-15min jamming I find myself to reach out to resample a sound pattern into one of the 7 sample slots. To add more sonic variety - only 3 synth sounds in a project do sound quite monoton to me over time. With that here a few things I wish Yamaha could address / add
* Patterns do store the selected sound for Synth1/2/DX and Sampler
(so that e.g. for Pattern 1+2 I could use a Pad Sound on Synth 2 but in Pattern 3 the Synth 3 has a Pluck or Bell Sound. (Like the MC707/101).
* Increase the duration of sampling - e.g. 16sec is too short for some 8 or 16 bar recordings. better to have 40 or 60sec, would be ok if than is only mono.
* For Resampling, have a short cut to select which tracks are source to resample, while others might play in the mix.
Maybe I am doing things wrong here, but currently to resample a pattern i need to solo or unmute the tracks to be recorded, the issue is that the resampling does not provide the context (e.g. when to stop a recording), hence I would love if could listen to all tracks while resampling records only the selected tracks.
* Enhance SamplePlayback mode (add a page 5 in sound parameters, and add play back options like One-Shot/Trigger, Reverse, Ping-Pong, or merge the PEG Attack/Decay to single know and have one for playback
Wild wish !!! Add AWM2 Synth Sounds to Perc 1 / Perc 2, as they are monophonic sequencer at least the could cover base, Lead or pluck sounds.
Other improvement is enhance the keyboard mode to have make it simpler to use tones from different octaves
* In Keyboard Mode switching octaves up + DOWN is a cumbersome, why not use the Key1 and 8 to switch the octaves, color them in Blue (like on the MC101)
* Would be cool if the Keyboard Mode could be extended in 2 ways to better play solos, lines a cross an octave.
a.) Change from normal to chromatic mode (Key 9-16 octave , Key 1-8, Octave+1, SynthKeys 1-7 Octave-1)
b.) Add in Scale a Keyboard+ mode, where the synth keys become an extension of the Sequence Keys and scale shifts on semitone down (Top Row Key 1 A#, Key 2 (oct-), Key 3 C# ... Key 8(A'#), Synth Key 1 C'#... )
Further some though collections
* Add an LFO Sound Parameter page for all Sound sources Type, Rate, Depth1, Depth2
* Currently ARP is stored with the Sound, using different ARP Types across in different Patterns of the same sound source is not possible, so either store the ARP Type in the pattern or record the ARP as notes in the Sequence. this allows more variety in a single project
I know that is a lot, but those are the missing points for me that as much as I like the SEQTRAK, keeps me putting it away after a few days, because most of the limitations do not allow me to enrich the project with more variety to make some thing for my liking.
Hence I often default back to MC101, even with less hand on controls allows me to express the "music in me" in more "colors".
Hello,
Thanks for the suggestions. I would encourage you to join the YamahaSynth IdeaScale community. This is the best place to log feature requests and improvements.
Blake, I voted and submitted ideas already. But I think a discussion in a larger group could help to crystallize things.
Thanks! Just wanted to make sure your ideas got visibility with our development team.
