First of all thank you for providing Soundmondo!
First look is really great! Waiting was worth it.

Here is a suggestion: provide a pre listen function, even for none members.
This could create customers which don't own a reface right now.

Creation of the sounds should be possible:
1 connect all type of reface's to a computer/server (the reface sample farm; ),
2 upload the sound settings
3 play a tune,
4 sample it and
5 store the sample result within Soundmondo

Maybe sound creators could provide their own tune, which is best suited to promote their settings. If none is available a default sequence should be used.

So Soundmondo could provide a unique interface for easy listing to sounds, which increases usability dramatically and maybe even sales.

Thanks friends
Jürgen

Thank you for your kind words and thoughts.

Just FYI, each poster can provide an audio clip with their upload by linking it to a Soundcloud account. In our "best posts" scenario, the author might play a short demo of the Voice they have created. This would accomplish what you are suggesting and illustrate exactly how (beyond the written description) to approach playing their creation. Some have even posted YouTube clips of them playing the sound (really cool!)

Many of the posters so far are into posting quantity, hopefully, as this grows and grows, more folks will see the advantage of linking a short audio demo of their creation! And/or a video clip with sound and visuals!

We will take you suggestion as a reason to redouble our effort to encourage including a short audio clip... Those Voices that include it are so much more inviting to explore!

Thanks so much!

Oh, thank you, for your quick feed back.

Yes, I saw and heard some of the linked voices. But this is optional and depends on the individual provider. With a generic approach, for every voice a demo would be available. This could be possible even in the Browse view, which would make searching for sounds much easier.

But this is just a suggestion...

Thanks,
Jürgen

I do not understand what you mean by a "generic approach" - sorry. Please explain. If the author chooses to put a demo that would be the only way I can see having a demo. What would you suggest a generic demo should play? Don't think that would work (some sounds are mono, some are polyphonic). And you should not be in a hurry when auditioning sounds (any ways), just my humble opinion.

Okay the "generic approach" would be: play a simple standard melody, or a scale, and two or three cords (if polyphonic). This should be sampled using something like above mentioned "reface sample farm" and made available for each voice.
This would be the default approach.
If a voice designer wants to set this melody, scale and cords, this should be possible as well (may by using a MIDI sequence).
This would be the next level.
The even more advance level is already existing e.g. have a link to soundcloud or YT.
But this requires technical stuff like Interfaces etc and implies work (a lot work, if you want to make it good). With the "generic approach" you (yamaha) have control about the quality (sample rate, volume), which could make the reface more impressive.

I absolutely agree with you on "you should not be in a hurry when auditioning sounds". I would like to add: you should do it in an easy way with good consistent quality. I guess, a "generic" pre listen feature would support this ;-).

So hope this helps, and don't hesitance to ask more questions.

I've learned some thing from the great programmer's - and trust me, it is an art. In my job at Yamaha I was fortunate enough to attend one of the international programming get togethers, many years ago. They were using my ears as a fresh set of ears in the group. Sort of an outside observer... Well hearing the programmer approach playing their own sound is a value able thing! No one understands the sound, the approach to getting something out of the sound, like the person who programmed it.

Mostly generic phrase assignments work by serendipity only. What if it is a tender pad, or a mono bass, or a string sound, versus aggressive piano... You get to pick from generic phrases in the CAPTURE app... It's pure luck if you find one appropriate, no less inspired. And you've got choices... Fine for those in a hurry (thus my point) but....

Personally, I'd much rather hear the author play a brief passage with the sound. I remember it was like being at a concert, a personal command performance as these seasoned professional programmers performed their own creations. Frankly, it was an invaluable experience for me. With each sound you began to understand what the programmer was going after, rather than just guessing "how" to approach playing it!!! Rather than just your own approach... I've said it before and I believe it: there are no bad sounds! I hear so many people talk about what they like and dislike among any set of Sounds. To me a sound is either appropriate or inappropriate for what you have in mind, musically, at the time. So if your thinking "I'm going to play this riff to try out a sound..." This means the sound will be judged by how well it fits what you have in mind, NOT by whether it is a sound you could like if you had only thought to play something else!

There are no bad sounds, they are appropriate or inappropriate for what your musically thinking.

I've tried some sounds, I didn't know what to play... One listen to the author and I understand exactly where it might fit. I think it is at the heart of the social sharing potential of Soundmondo. So I'm going to encourage those posting sounds to take a few seconds and record a short demo of your creation... Particularly if you're proud of it!

For those reasons I think it's awesome when the author plays the program. It's an honor to listen! Even to those just starting with programming!

Yes, you are right and I agree with you on every word.

And now I see, my last answer was misleading and didn't get the whole story of my understanding of "generic approach". I will try to explain it better this time. Starting with your points.

> Mostly generic phrase assignments work by serendipity only.
Yes, that's true. In my answer this was the first method. It is clear, this will lead to undesired results. I had made this suggestion as a "better than nothing" solution, but didn't mentioned it this way. It's not the "generic approach", this is more.

> Personally, I'd much rather hear the author play a brief passage with the sound.
This was the second method: If a voice designer wants to set this melody, scale and cords, this should be possible as well (may by using a MIDI sequence).
This is: playing the voice. For me it is part of the "generic approach".

So the "generic approach" includes the playing of individual tunes. It also includes the sampling (under quality control of yamaha), and the web interface presentation of the sampled sounds. I named it "generic" because the voice designer has nothing to do for this, except playing the tune (while connected to Soundmondo).

This discussion is really interesting, because it shows some new aspects of Soundmondo. You mentioned it in your first answer and now again. People should perform their voices. So Soundmondo is not only about storing voices, it also about performing. And here new things arise: what is performed: a single voice? Multiple voices? Reface only? Synths only? Questions and even more questions …

Now back again to the "generic approach". The term "generic" is used in a more IT technical sense. It should not be read, as a method for setting up a default tune.

Sorry, for my misleading answer.

So, being interested what will happen next.
