Soundmondo and MODX sync issues

Hi,

Yesterday I decided to try Soundmondo for the first time with my MODX, but was not able to receive sounds over my USB connection.
After clicking on the sync button, I just got to the voice description page, but no sound was transferred.
I read that reinstalling the drivers might fix the issue and after doining so, I was able to transfeer sounds to my MODX, but today the same thing happened again.
Do I need to reinstall the drivers everytime I want to use the Soundmondo page or is there anything else I could try?

Thanks
/Jugge

The Webmidi javascript code Yamaha is using has a bug which is vulnerable to changes in your MIDI device's identification. This has been a "day 1" bug that hasn't been addressed apparently over the years despite clear feedback.

The problem you can force is plugging in your keyboard into a different MIDI port. The driver will reserve a new identifier for this connection thinking you may have plugged in a new (and 2nd) keyboard into your computer and still keep the previous port's identifier in case you plugged in a keyboard there simultaneously. As a result, you will see your keyboard's driver name have extra designators like "1-MONTAGE" "2-MONTAGE" (or "1-MODX", "2-MODX", etc ...) And it is exactly this extra "#-" designation that trips up Soundmondo's faulty code.

The way to get back to a "happy" setting is to remove the driver and reinstall.

Part of the point of USB is for "plug and play" - where you do not have to worry about things like this. However, poor implementation can foul up the best of intentions.

Other than Yamaha fixing the problem - or you never moving your keyboard, never rebooting, never changing any configuration, etc. There's not a way to avoid this. Eventually you're going to run into this doing fairly normal things.

Thanks Jason. I will try to move the keyboard to another port.

Actually, moving the keyboard to another port is what can expose the problem. The resolution is to keep uninstalling and reinstalling the driver when this happens.

Ah, got it. For some reason, now it doesn't even work when uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers. Tried it two times without any luck 🙁
It's a shame, because the one time it worked, I found a lot of interesting stuff. I hope Yamaha will be able to get it sorted out in the future.

If you have an iPad or iPhone, SoundMondo is more stable, but vastly worse to navigate within.

Unfortunatly I dont have an iPad or iPhone, so I cant try that.

I have tried to uninstalling/reinstalling my MODX driver a coupple of times now, but still no luck. Reinstalling the driver only worked the first time for me.
Also tried with both Opera and Microsoft Edge browser, but the sync still doesnt work for me.

Are those performances only available through soundmondo or can I download them and install them manually from a USB drive?

Thanks

Chrome is suggested for the best implementation of WebMIDI.

https://yamahasynth.com/learn/apps/soundmondo-faqs

Currently, Soundmondo requires the latest version of the Chrome web browser found here (J comment: link not given). Soundmondo runs on Mac or PC.

Note if your driver name starts with "MODX" and not a number prefix - you don't need to reinstall the driver.

Why isn't Yamaha embarrassed enough about this to do something about it?

SoundMondo is about 2/3rds of the way to being a good idea.

And 1/10th of the way to being well designed and implemented.

As is this forum.

Found this site yesterday, which has (I think) all the performances from the soundmondo page available for download.- Soundmondo Performances

All patches are in sysex and midi format. Just tried some of the ones for the MODX and they worked great.
A big thanks to the person who created this page and let us who have issues with Soundmondo enjoy all those great performances

I suspect that genius might be one of the Martin's that frequents this site.

To him, whoever he is. THANK YOU!!!

And Jörgen, thank you for finding and sharing !!!

This used to work but is apparently trash now.

Uninstalled the driver and reinstalled driver, rebooted, checked MIDI settings about 10 times, 3 different browsers, = NO SYNC!

Yamaha makes nice keyboards but their web dev is absolute trash

I'm now adding one of the chrome flag settings to the mix of "once you know" fixes. I agree that the web implementation has been lacking from inception.

That it's possible to get to work shouldn't be the goal. It should be drop-dead easy and flawless. If something isn't correct - the interface should detect what's wrong and instruct the user all of the missing dependencies.

This is generally pretty far from the design philosophy I see from all of the Yamaha gear I've owned and used. Which is unfortunate.

I am having a similar problem to what was descirbed above (1 year ago).

Was trying SoundMono for the first time yesterday.

My MODX is connected to my Win 10 PC via USB to Host.

My drivers & frimware are all up to date.

Tried both Edge & Chrome.

Found a sound.
Status is "Connected"
Sync is Enabled
As soon as I click on Sync, it takes me to a Save Page! Nothing is loaded onto the MODX. I did not continue past this point thinking that it is the other way around, i.e. saving whatever is on the MODX into SoundMono.

I see some of the solutions above is to Uninstall/Reinstall drivers and/or change USB port...
Or go to iPAD.

I did not try any of the above yet, I am here to ask is there a permanent fix to this problem?

I will definitly try the iPAD later, but what I was doing yesterday is following a tutorial, so having SoundMono hyperlinks directly in the article is a time saver.

Mentioned in another thread - one item I saw using the web interface (on a Mac - but Windows is probably works the same) is that if I had a user Performance loaded then the web interface wouldn't transfer the Performance with a Sync. At the same time, iOS would do this fine.

What I had to do is first switch to a Preset and I picked "Init Normal (AWM-2)". After recalling this, I could sync fine. I'm not sure all User Performances cause this problem - or if it's just certain parameters that trip up the web interface. However, it's a new wrinkle with a new workaround that I keep in my bag of Soundmondo tricks.
