Just replaced the battery on my DX7s. CRT voices seem to work ok but INT voices are corrupt. I'd like to load them from the factory ROM but the cursor seems stuck when I get to Fractional Scaling. Any ideas how to move the cursor so I can reload the factory voices from the ROM?
I also noticed that I can't do a battery voltage test. I would like to know if this is related to the INT voices being corrupt?
Your problems seem to be more than than was solved by simply replacing the battery. You should contact Customer Support directly before taking it to an authorized Service Center. Customer Support may have some things for you to check before you do, however.
DX7s [14] utility edit:
Internal memory protection off.
Initialize voice and store to INT 1~64.
Initialize performance and store to INT 1~32.
The internal RAM is filled again with valid data.
Bad Mister:
I am the original owner of the DX7s and the machine was well cared for until I got a replace the battery message.
After installing a new battery things are not working as well. Last time I contacted Yamaha support they sent me an entire key bed for my P-80 digital piano and installed it free of charge. Unfortunately the authorized Yamaha support center (Electronic Service Lab) went out of business. If I get frustrated enough I will have to call Yamaha or email them.
Paul:
I can't even access the utility edit. When I try all I get is algorithm 25. I wonder if I should take the bottom panel off and double check all connections?
After opening the bottom and double checking all connections it's fixed. I think I spent more time trying to move the sounds from the ROM cartridge to the internal storage then opening the unit up, removing the battery and attaching wires and a battery holder off the motherboard. Now I have all factory settings at this point and every thing works fine. I did notice that voice 11 switch is slow to respond as are a few others. The Yamaha rep who called me up said to spray them with electrical cleaner.
Questions; Do I have to remove the board from from the bottom of the unit to clean the voice switches or can they be accessed another way?
What brand cleaner is best?
Thanks in advance to all respondents,
Mark
Call back, I certainly knew at one point, but have purged that information to make room for other data in my limited brain capacity 🙂
That's like 30 years ago.
Get a cleaning brand that is safe for use cleaning electronic circuits. If the unit has not been cleaned in years, dust can slowly win. When you get them on the phone, talk with them they'll take you through the process - or at least describe it well enough for you to go ahead and do it. But a thorough cleaning is recommended - an authorized service center will do that or, with care you can do it yourself. If you decide to do it yourself, ask before you proceed. Knowing which screws to remove (and more importantly) which ones to leave alone, and what and where to spray, and how much, can be the difference between success and a painful lesson of what not to do. If you know what I mean....
Unplug the unit from the wall before attempting to clean or open the instrument - just saying....
Hi, my DX7 ll FD doesn't like it when I try to re-edit a voice I built and already saved. It complains about fractional. I did manage to scratch build a new voice, rename it, and save it in internal memory. I also managed that with the cartridge memory. But now I can't figure out how to keep editing them.
Fractional scalings can be loaded only from ROM or RAM4 cartridges, and can be saved only to the RAM4 cartridge which has to be formatted for accepting it. You can save 64 fractional scalings there, there are saved to the same memory number as patch to which it belongs.
Everything is explained well in DX7 II Supplemental booklet Nr. 14 - Programming Fractional Scaling. It was my idea 5 years ago to collect and scan all these booklets and publish them for everybody, which I did with the great help of another member of YamahaDX yahoo group Rawl Gelinas, and thanks to some other members who sold to me or contributed their booklets. All these booklets were published with the permission of Yamaha on various locations and forums. You can download them from some addresses on the net. Still four booklets are missing... If somebody has them please contact me.
The same way we did also the old American AfterTouch magazines, where's a lot of useful info about (nowadays) the old Yamaha instruments. I added also some other documents - Canadian magazine X-Press.
