I don't know if you'd call the unit vintage yet, but my question is about the Yamaha Motif ES6 and exporting beats from the unit into a PC for further editing.
Bottom line, I have a friend who's a mastermind with this unit but on a limited budget so we don't have the funds to pay a producer to do all of this for us. He has about 30 or more completely finished beats/tracks. What we are looking to do is find the easiest way to extract all the raw midi data into a program (Logic, Ableton, Pro Tools, whatever) while maintaining the sequencing and just replace all the sounds with newer VSTs to give them a more modernized sound/feel . I understand the actual audio sounds won't travel with the midi data and that's ok, I just need the sequencing to stay where it's at so we can change anything (sounds/VSTs) once we have it all mapped out and seperated into individual tracks by instrument in whatever recording software we use. Is this possible?
I realize we can record via midi/usb out live for each track, but we're trying to avoid having to literally live play each song just to transfer them.
Any help would be appreciated!!
You need to SAVE your Motif ES Song or Pattern as Standard MIDI Files to a storage device (USB stick), you can then move the MIDI to your favorite computer DAW as a .MID File.
Press [FILE]
Press [F2] SAVE
Set the TYPE = SMF
Set the SOURCE to the Song you wish to export.
If a Pattern set the Pattern number and the Section letter you wish to export.
This will create a .mid File that can easily be loaded by any DAW software.
Can I jump in here for related help? I am trying to create an SMF from PATTERN files to then use on PC to transcribe to music notation. However I can't seem to convert and create MIDI from my PATTERN files....On the ES, I thought I could only save PATTERNS as ALL PATTERN file. I can't find any option (in the file menu) to choose a SOURCE to SAVE any patterns as a SMF. What am I missing / doing wrong?

See page 132 of your Motif ES Owner's Manual for the details: "Saving a Song or a Pattern Section as a Standard MIDI File"
