So I am the proud new owner of a new YAMAHA MOXF6! I haven't yet purchased and installed an additional "Flash Board" for my MOXF. So I assume I cannot yet purchase and or download sound libraries for my MOXF? Has YAMAHA released or created a sound library for the MOXF of the vintage analog modeling synths: AN200 and AN1X among others from the CS-80 to the CSX series? If so are they available for free download or purchase from the YAMAHA SYNTH SITE? And should I always avoid 3rd party sound libraries?

What is the better of the Flash boards to purchase for my MOXF?

Welcome to YamahaSynth! Congratulations on your new MOXF6!

Let's start by straightening a few things out. There are going to be two basic types of Libraries for the MOXF... those that contain new 'Samples' and require a FLASH BOARD and those that do not have new audio Samples and therefore do not require the optional FLASH BOARD. We will refer to the first type as Sample Libraries and the latter as just Voice Libraries. Although both contain "Voices"... the ones that require a FLASH BOARD will simply be referred to as Sample Libraries.

I haven't yet purchased and installed an additional "Flash Board" for my MOXF. So I assume I cannot yet purchase and or download sound libraries for my MOXF?

The MOXF is compatible with VOICE data prepared for the Motif XF series. Any VOICE that can be loaded into the Motif XF can be loaded into your MOXF. Of course, if that VOICE requires custom SAMPLES then you must have the optional FLASH BOARD installed. Make sense?

There are several free Sample Libraries available at the official Yamaha MOXF Download page: http://download.yamaha.com

The optional FLASH BOARDS come in 512MB or 1024MB sizes. The MOXF features one slot. The Flash Board allows you to extend the Oscillator Waveform list... your new MOXF comes with 3,977 Waveforms, the Flash Board will allow you to extend that available Waveform list with as many as 2,048 of your own hand-picked favorite new Waveforms. These can be from Sample Libraries or can be from data you've created yourself and import to your MOXF via computer Editing software (The John Melas Waveform Editor program allows you to create your own MOXF compatible files using your own custom audio data! John Melas is a trusted third party developer who works closely with Yamaha to develop tools for your synthesizer).

Has YAMAHA released or created a sound library for the MOXF of the vintage analog modeling synths: AN200 and AN1X among others from the CS-80 to the CSX series?

No. But there are certainly no shortage of Voice Libraries available that would address the analog emulations. See the link provided below.

One better than that, we have released as a FREE download the AN2015 a very nice analog modeling synth engine... find out all about it here:
AN2015 Virtual Analog Modeling Synth

With appropriate Camera Kit connection you can play this through your MOXF... One simple connection allows you to control the AN2015 and its audio will pass through the MOXF to your sound system - it is really a very cool addition _ plus it is absolutely free. The AN 2015 App runs in current iPad/iPhone devices.

If so are they available for free download or purchase from the YAMAHA SYNTH SITE? And should I always avoid 3rd party sound libraries?

While you should always be careful when purchasing anything, you can rest assured... Yamaha has an official website where we have gathered together what we know to be legitimate, world-class third party programmers and the best of their work is available.

please visit YamahaMusicSoft - here you can find Libraries made for the MOXF specifically:
YamahaMusicSoft: MOXF Libraries

Please read the descriptions carefully... if they mention SAMPLES you know you will need to expand your MOXF with an optional FLASH BOARD.

Additional note: Thank you for the question... It prompted me to go look at what is on offer at the YamahaMusicSoft website, and it is not always completely clear which Libraries have Samples (and would require a Flash Board) and which Libraries do not require the Flash Boards).

I have sent a note to the parties involved and hopefully this will be made clearer.

Coming up shortly, we have in the works a series of articles on Synth Basics which will deal with building analog-type sounds with the MOXF and the Motif XF series. Check back in a few days... Always new stuff being posted here!

Mark,
The free MOXF Yamaha EDM Expansion voice set contains 32 voices, 4 Performances, 32 Arps & 9 Waveforms (you therefore need a flashboard).
Believe these were sampled from the AN1x. You can also get another free AN1x voice set from the producer of these voice sets at -
http://d-edgesound.com/contents/Blog/entori/2014/1/11_050_MOTIF_XF_XS_MOXF_Soundset_AN1x_Energy.html
This contains 72 Voices and 5 Waveforms.

If you have a DAW ie Cubase etc and use VST you may also be interested in the following:
Yamaha Synthesizers Europe currently have several voice sample packs freely available for the Yamaha Beat Zampler - CS-80, CS-40M, DX-7 & DX-1/5

Hi! Thank you for starting this thread. I had exactly the same question.

OK- great news re AN1X, because I was wondering if there was some way to enact a PLG-150 AN type set up on the MOXF6. I assume these replies must be the only way and its possible to use all the affordances already within the MO6F to emulated the AN1X using some of those voice sets? (BTW not many of those links above work, unfortunately)

..But what about the CS6X - is buying one the only answer? I ask because I am currently trying to decide whether to buy a CS6X (with PLG-100 XG) or an MOXF6 , or both (in the next few days!).

1)Is there any point in getting both - or with a bit of work can I achieve the same or similar sounds (plus vibe) of the CS6X in an MOXF (but use another sampler and load the onto a flash instead of having the inbuilt sample on a CS6X)?

I have always wanted a CS6X but its a bit old now and they are a very similar price.

2)Also does anyone know why the CS6X has FOUR pedal inputs?!

3)Finally, is it really the case that neither synths have a 909-style kit like the one on the CS1X?

Thanks in advance!

The CS6X (circa 1999) and the MOXF (circa 2013) — I don’t know what to advise you beyond the standard risk involved in vintage gear… especially gear that dates back to the last century (parts are non-existent more than likely. The MOXF you are still within the 7 year post discontinue where parts are likely still available). Flash Boards may be hard to find. CS6X synth PLG Boards also hard to find.

The CS6X were pre-runners to the Motif-series, which begat the MOXF-series.
Just FYI — MODX is current.

2)Also does anyone know why the CS6X has FOUR pedal inputs?!

Like most Yamaha synths two Foot Switches: one dedicated to Sustain, the other Assignable. And two Foot Controllers: one defaults to Expression, the other to cc4 Foot Control (assignable)

3)Finally, is it really the case that neither synths have a 909-style kit like the one on the CS1X?

The CS6X definitely has both a TR808 and TR909 drum Kit
