Hi dear synthie-folks, I want to use the MOXF 8 for live-registration and change the five arp-variations in realtime. Concretely I would like to have chillout-drum-and-bass-pattern with changeable intro, ending, two main parts and fillin, play a chord-pad in left hand and switch between different melody voices in the right hand. This is possible in the performance mode, where I have to put all theses things into ONE performance, because otherwise the pattern stops when switchig to a new performance. As there are only four voices in the performance-mode, this solution is a little weak. I tried it in the pattern-mode, but this solution is also weak, as I always first have to select the channels of the drumtrack and bass-track to change the arp before I go back to the midi channels of the melodytrack change the voice - the song will be finished before I press all my butttons! 🙁 So my question is: Does anybody know another possibility, may be in the song-mixing-mode...??? I would be also thankful If you let me know that it is IMPOSSIBLE, so I would not waste more time on that. Thanks for thinking, thanks for answering! Best regards from Bremen, Germany, Thomas

We have to ask, Did you purchase the wrong keyboard? We ask because the PSR-S-series is designed to do exactly what you are asking the MOXF to do.

This is possible in the performance mode, where I have to put all theses things into ONE performance, because otherwise the pattern stops when switchig to a new performance. As there are only four voices in the performance-mode, this solution is a little weak.

The PSR-S series features eight Parts in the backing band - it was designed to do this accompaniment function. Along with automatic Fill-in section changes, you have multiple Intros, Endings which function in those roles... the intros automatically transition to main sections, the endings stop playback... its all designed to support what you describe.

You are attempting to make the MOXF do something that Yamaha designed a (different) whole series of keyboards to do. While there is a similarity between Arpeggio phrases + Performances (MOXF) to the Arranger Workstation STYLE function... but trust Yamaha on this, we know the difference.

Now say you know all of this... and you still want to (against all logic) make the MOXF into an Arranger, then as you are aware some things will appear to "not work" or seem even to work against you... it's because the "focus" of the features as implemented in the MOXF is on Music Production (as would be useful in recording original music tracks), versus the STYLE engine's focus on real time popular Song performance. The differences have impact on "how" each product line approaches a somewhat similar feature set.

Arpeggio Phrases are, indeed, single phrases that behave like a STYLE part if you were to isolate a single part. But unlike Styles, Arps are offered individually, not to recreate a specific genre en total, necessarily, but actually to encourage mixing and matching of different genres. A Drum Track might be created, in realtime, by manually selecting one phrase after another - while recording results to the Sequencer... placing "fills" where you desire. Then by overdubbing, you could create a guitar Part using different guitar ARP phrases accessed one after another ... and so on.

If your goal is realtime (all at once) performing, triggering and placing fill-ins as you go, you will find the MOXF a hostile patient... because this is not its focus.

We recommend the PSR-S970 - it was designed from the ground up to do the auto accompaniment thing (better than most any keyboard on the planet) it is an extremely mature product with tons of targeted features for the task you've describe. Exactly!
