Would there be a way to use the knobs and sliders on the motif XF to control cubase 12 using the new midi remote feature?

That would be so sweet…

Setting up a control surface is easy enough. I would think most everything you would want to do would require no actual script programming.

MODX/Montage are using Mackies MCU protocol. For this devices Steinberg still recommends not using the new Midi Remote functionality. I think at the current state it‘s not possible to fully adapt to the MCU protocol.

I tried to script some things and create panels for different devices but come to limits (touch sensitive motorfader issues - no clue what happens here, performance issues, …). I think it‘s better to wait for some bugfix releases (I think they 1st bugfix is coming soon).

In my opinion the functionality is not fully reddy for productional environmental at the moment.

I tried setting up Montage and run into problems without scripting for buttons like the scene buttons that use the same CC but different ranges. However, the question centered around Motif XF here - I couldn't think of a control that would give the new system a problem.

It is true that this is the introductory version of a new feature and somewhat complete with more features coming. However, for "standard stuff" - some find it fairly useful as-is. Still, certain areas are already more fully supported using the older Mackie system as you say.

Sorry, I missed that the question is about Motif XF. But my statement doesn‘t change because also the Motif XF uses MDU protocol.

Don‘t get me wrong: the midi remote functionality is great. I wrote and use already some scripts and they are doing already a fine job. But at the moment it‘s not possible to implement such a complete functionality like MCU control offers.

You need to put the Remote in Montage in "Plugin" mode, not "Track" mode.
The Scene buttons will then emit different CCs and you can also change the CC# if you want.

If the Motif XF also has a mode which was designed for controlling Plugins/VSTi through their "MIDI Learn" feature, that mode should be used for the new MIDI Remote API in Cubase 12, as opposed to the usual "DAW Remote" which uses Mackie.

Well, I found a webpage that explains how to use master mode to configure the knobs and sliders so that they can talk to Cubase:

https://rockinghorsemusic.wordpress.com/using-the-motif-xf-as-a-controller/

Thought I'd share it because I know I could never have figured it out myself. Maybe it will be useful to someone else.

After following the steps from the link, I can now use the Motif for "quick controls" to control some VSTi parameters, which could be handy. As for the other midi assignments, well, the motif "Remote" has already done it for you, for the most part. (The extent to which you can access effects parameters it's still pretty impressive. It's just hard to keep track of what the knobs do. )

However, I am still using cubase Artist 10.5, not 12.
So I don't know if Version 12 would offer even richer possibilities, or present new problems, or what.
Watching YouTube tutorial on the new midi remote , I see that you have to provide the name of the Device from a menu. I'd be surprised if Yamaha Motif is on it, as it is a discontinued product.
(just checked the online manual, it looks like you can add the name of a device if it's not already present, so that's promising.)
