Hi All,
I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice on this topic. I have a Motif XF7 with the firewire upgrade installed and I am wondering if it is possible to run firewire and midi simultaneously. What I am trying to do is to have the Motif XF connected to the laptop running Pianoteq (both audio and midi) and at the same time, have a controller triggering the sounds in the Motif via midi. I know I could probably run the laptop by both the motif and the controller but I only have a MacBook air and I don't want to chance overloading it and having it freeze on stage. I know I could also create a split on the motif to cover the sounds I need but a spilt keyboard seems strange and unnatural to me.
Is this possible? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Both the FW and 5-pin MIDI jacks are active through the computer. When you select MIDI IN/OUT = FW, the 5-pin MIDI jacks act as a MIDI Interface.
When using FW the XF is not just a Music Production Synthesizer, it is an Audio and MIDI interface, not only for itself but for one external device.

The A/D Input can be routed through the XF to the computer
The 5-pin MIDI jacks are also routed through to the computer.

When you setup for MIDI in your DAW (like Cubase), the Motif XF FW is referred to as "Motif XF Main";
the 5-pin MIDI jacks are referred to as "Motif XF MIDI IN" and "Motif XF MIDI OUT".

A MIDI Track set for MIDI IN = "Motif XF Main" will receive messages from the XF
A MIDI Track set for MIDI IN = "Motif XF MIDI In" will receive messages from the 5-Pin MIDI In jack

A MIDI Track set to MIDI OUT = "Motif XF Main" will transmit messages to the XF
A MIDI Track set to MIDI OUT = "Motif XF MIDI Out" will transmit messages to the 5-Pin MIDI Out jack

So data for the external device, literally, passes through the XF... because you are using the MIDI INTERFACE function. You can play the external keyboard and/or the XF keyboard (with Local Control = Off) and trigger any device you like.

You can use either keyboard to play your plug in, you can use either keyboard to play the XF tone engine. It is that flexible!

There is zero chance of overloading things, that's plenty of computer for music tasks Remember the XF is doing both the MIDI and audio interfacing, taking what little burden that is... you don't mention what or even if you are using a DAW software... but let us know if you have further questions.
