I love the MX series of synths.
Have the 49 key.
I had the original MOTIF classic for over 12 years, but i sold it.
Regreted it almost right after i sold it.

About a year ago i got the MX49.
I actually like it better than the MOTIF classic.
There are some voice improvements, and some added articulations to some of the MX voices.
As a sound module, i find the MX49 easier to use with my midi rig.
My KRONOSX61 remotes with MX49 very well.
The MX49 is also cool looking and it has a very tidy small footprint in my studio.
As a small synth, MX49 is the best bang for the buck rompler on planet earth.
I learned one thing about YAMAHA MOTIF synths, and that is i have to have that MOTIF sound in my studio.

To try and answer jans question if i understand it correctly.

The MX synths do not have an onboard sequencer.
The MX synths come with CUBASE recording software that turns MX and a pc into a complete audio and midi sequencing recording studio.
The MX synths will playback midi files.
The MX synths will playback 16 bit cd quality wav files.
