USB midi to iPad + external midi clock

MODX8 running 2.00 firmware.
I'm using an iPad as a sound module, connected on the 'USB to host' port. Is there a way to simultaneously bring in a midi clock to the MODX from a Mac Book running Ableton? Note, only the MODX needs to see the external midi clock. The iPad does not. I've tried dozens of configurations, but cannot get a config that works.

Can you just have the iPad generate the clock instead of adding another external device?

I haven't searched around for a free solution - but using this or a similar app:

I think what your goal here is to have the iPad's instrument at a different tempo and/or tempo doesn't matter to it. This approach should be compatible since you can tell this app which devices to send the clock to and only target the MODX.

I guess one reason not to use the iPad for the clock is that the clock has been reported as unstable on many iPads particularly if you navigate away from the app supplying the clock. And I do see that using the Macbook is listed as a solution.

One way of getting the rig to work is to connect the iPad to your Mac and also MODX to the Mac. Then use a DAW on the Mac to route the MIDI from MODX to the iPad hosted instrument. In order to return audio - you'd have to use an aggregate audio interface (Macbook config) so both audio from the iPad and audio to the MODX is available (in order to pass through the audio from the iPad back to MODX for playing out your MODX-connected speakers).
