Hello: I have a CP 4. I would like to add rotary speaker effect to the mod wheel for all of the Hammond "Voices." I've watched the tutorials, and looked for resources, but don't see this issue addressed in depth. I've followed the steps for other effects, but get a weird vibrato, not the rotary speaker speeding up (though I did succeed in getting the rotary speaker at a slow speed added to Effect A; I just can't get the Mod wheel to speed it up). Can you please help?

Thanks, SL

Hi Steve, Welcome to Yamaha Synth!

While there is no way to add the Rotary Speaker Effect to all the organ Voices in one single operation, you can, however, certainly create Performances that have whatever Insertion Effects you wish to assign to a Voice. The INSERTION EFFECTS can be programmed and stored per PERFORMANCE.

The first thing you want to get a handle on is that only the first 9 Organ sounds come with the Rotary Speaker already pre-assigned as the INSERTION "A" Effect. The others do not. Think of these VOICES as a reference library - when you want one of them - bring it forward and program it as you desire and store the result in a new PERFORMANCE>

If you wish to use any of the other organs, you will need to assign the Insertion Effects you would like, and store them to a PERFORMANCE. There are no USER VOICES... all changes to any of the VOICES are stored to a PERFORMANCE location. Even those that come pre-assigned can be changed and stored in your PERFORMANCE.

Each PERFORMANCE location can store a MAIN Voice, and if you wish a LAYER, and a SPLIT Voice... Two of the three PARTS can have dual Insertion Effects active. (A maximum of four INSERTION EFFECTS total, between any two PARTS).

You don't say which organ, in particular, you are working with - so for sake of explanation - we will pick Organ number 10 "RockRotar2", since it does not have any pre-assigned INSERTION EFFECTS at all. The following would be how you would go about creating a new PERFORMANCE using this Organ, removing the vibrato and assigning the INSERTION EFFECT, starting from an initialized condition:

Call up a PERFORMANCE
Press these two buttons together to start from scratch: [SHIFT] + [ENTER] = QUICK RESET
This resets the PERFORMANCE to just the MAIN Voice and just the first Piano VOICE assigned (CFX St) _ from here we can build our new PERFORMANCE.
Press the dedicated [ORGAN] button and use the DATA DIAL to select 10: RockRotar2

in the instructions below the word "Select" means move to the given number + hit [ENTER] to actually make the selection.

Press [EDIT]
Select 02: PART - we will edit "PART" parameters as the Organ Voice occupies the MAIN PART
Select 01: PLAY MODE
CURSOR to screen that allows you to edit the "MWPMod" - this is what is assigning the Modulation Wheel to do Pitch Modulation (Vibrato).
Set the value from the default 10 to 0. This will remove vibrato (it is only "weird" because it is not what you want!)

Press [EXIT]
Select 03: EFFECT A
With the Cursor to the left of "CTG" (Category) dial up the "T&R" (Tremolo and Rotary Speaker Category)
Move the Cursor to the right and select the Rotary Speaker
Move the Cursor to the right again and select the Rotary Speaker type you desire.
Cursor down to see the parameters of this INSERT EFFECT
Please make a mental note of the initial speed - SLOW or FAST. This will be the speed when you initially call up this Program

Press [EXIT]
Select 05: CONTROLLER
Cursor Down to the screen where you can assign functions for the "MW"
Set the MW = EFFECT A (+) if the initial speed was SLOW - this way raising the MW will increase the speed from SLOW-to-FAST
Set the MW = EFFECT A (-) if the initial speed was FAST - this way raising the MW will decrease the speed FAST-to-SLOW

Press [EXIT] twice
(First time to exit the CONTROLLER area, second time to exit PART Edit)

Select 01: COMMON
Select 04: Name

Give your new PERFORMANCE a Name
Press [STORE] and write your newly edited PERFORMANCE to a memory location of your choosing.

Extra Credit:
You can take a shortcut to the INSERTION EFFECT display by pressing and holding the INSERT EFFECT [A] button for 2-3 seconds. This will jump directly to the INSERTION EFFECT "A" edit screen.

Hope that helps.
