How do I record the Motif -using performance- Bop Till You Drop - and another synth keyboard - A THE SAME TIME - so as to be able to Trade between the 2 kbds- ala Oscar Peterson and Jimmy Smith- in the motif xs's seq.,while still being able to separate the individual midi tracks of the performances - and eventually put the whole thing in LogicX? Please give full set up - Thanks , Alan

The Motif XS Direct Performance Record function is designed to record its own data, as MIDI, to the sequencer. There is no potential to also at the same time record an external devices MIDI data to its own separate Track, sorry. Not in the design concept. Since you mention Logic, why not setup to record everything "live" into your DAW as audio - we are sure it can handle it.

The only reason to record the data as MIDI at all would be to edit mistakes (Mr. Oscar Emmanuel Peterson and Mr. James Oscar Smith would never make any mistakes) 🙂
Two of our favorite people!

What you do have potential to do with a Motif XS equipped with mLAN/FireWire is route each PART, including the your other synth keyboard, to a separate audio track in your DAW. This would capture everything in one, live performance... direct-to-disk in the real sense of the word. Here's how this would work...

In the PERFORMANCE "Bop 'Til You Drop"
Press [EDIT]
Press [1] to select PART 1
Press [F1] VOICE
Press [SF2] Set the OUTPUT SELECT of the Acoustic Piano PART to "m1&2"

Press [2] to select PART 2
Set the OUTPUT SELECT of the Drums PART to "m3&4"

Press [3] to select PART 3
Set the OUTPUT SELECT of the Acoustic Bass PART to "m5&6"

Press [4] to select PART 4
Set the OUTPUT SELECT of the Rhythm Gtr PART to "m7&8"

Press [COMMON EDIT]
Press [F4] AUDIO IN
Set the OUTPUT SELECT for you external keyboard to "L&R"
You can assign a pair of INSERTION EFFECTs to your external keyboard - simply plug its L/R outputs to the XS's AD Input on the back panel. The Motif XS with mLAN/FW can act as an audio interface for an external device connected to the back panel A/D Inputs.
You can use the SYSTEM Reverb and Chorus of the XS on your external device (presumably its an Organ) as well.

This will allow you with your mLAN equipped Motif XS to record all five PARTS to separate Tracks in your favorite DAW - simply setup your DAW with 5 TRACKS to record your performance. The XS has 16 mLAN/FW audio output buses... The main Stereo L&R plus 14 assignable outputs. The assignable outputs can be configured as odd/even stereo pairs or as mono sends as you may require.

Tell us a bit more about what you are working with - do you have a Motif XS8? or a Motif 6/7 with an mLAN16E or FW16E? As you can see, what you seek can be done - as AUDIO. Let us know.

What you seek is not easily possible via MIDI, but is fairly straight ahead (pun intended) when recording it as audio, "live". Go for it!
