Hey gang, hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I love the sounds on the keyboard and would like to have Cubase play them on the MODX as opposed to VST‘s (processor hog). Would be great to offload the work to the keyboard rather than the virtual instruments.

To be clear, I know I can use the General MIDI init mode and hear different instruments that way, but the GM midi sounds are just that. Pretty basic.

Can I assign a performance (they sound better than GM) to a particular midi channel and furthermore, play multiple performances on different midi channels at the same time? Thanks!

Can the MODX play different Performances on different MIDI channels, simultaneously?

Short answer is no.

The correct answer requires an understanding of the MODX architecture. The individual program on the MODX is called a Performance.

A Performance can contain from one to sixteen Parts. If you ‘merge’ 16 single Part Performances together, you have one Performance with 16 Parts. You can address each Part on a separate MIDI Channel, 1-16.

The technical term for combining Performances is “Performance Merge”.

If your goal is to record to Cubase as MIDI, an understanding of how Multi Part Performances Transmit on multiple channels, and how that impacts your MIDI recording, is necessary. The MODX communicates with Cubase for both MIDI and Audio. There are 10 audio bus Outputs available for use on the MODX.

Recording as MIDI is done for the reason of ease of editing and changing one’s mind before committing to audio. To record multiple Multi Part Performances means developing a workflow that includes rendering of temporary audio file (using the FREEZE function). This allows you to use multiple instances of your hardware — once a MIDI recording is rendered as audio you can mute the MIDI Track and playback the temporary audio file. If later you wish to change something about that musical performance you have the original MIDI data as your ultimate level of “undo”.

In this manner there is really no limit to the number of Multi Part Performances you use. Is this workflow more complicated than a system where you set MIDI Receive Channels? ... undoubtedly. But the benefits of the amount of detail and individual control over nuance is worth the effort.

If you are using Cubase Pro, use the “MODX Multi channel Recording” template to make recording Multi Part Performances quick and easy.
The one thing you’ll discover is there are several ways to approach recording with the MODX, including using the internal Recorder to capture the initial MIDI recording... you can literally drag and drop it into a Cubase Project by opening MODX CONNECT inside of Cubase.

This will automatically separate the data to separate MIDI Tracks for editing and such.
