Hi there

I am wondering if there is any way to layer two sounds but with a slight difference to normal layering:

If the two parts are layered and I play a 3 or 4 note chord, I want to hear the first part as 3 or 4 notes, however I would like the second part to only play the top note of the chord.

Specifically I want to play piano chords with a xylophone, or similar mallet instrument just doubling on the top note of the chord.

Is this possible?

cheers

Not really. Conventional layering techniques would be if you're playing a 3 note chord then play the lower 2 notes on the "left" side of a split point and the top note on the "right" side of the split. You can octave shift the "left" vs "right" side so that the notes end up within the same octave. Then you can ensure the right side (upper note) doubles a mallet sound along with piano while the "left" side only plays piano. Same idea with a 4 note chord. Play 3 notes on the left side and the 4th on the right side.
