Hello !
This is a question about the upcoming pattern sequencer.
Will it be possible to use different sounds on the same track for each scene recording ?
For example.....Record clarinet on track one scene one, then record a flute on track one scene two ?
Thank you

The Performance Recorder now has a Pattern (Loop-based) Recording feature. It is designed to record the Performance.
There are several approaches... If Part 1 is a Clarinet, you could program Part 1 to also contain a Flute. Example, four Elements dedicated to Clarinet, four Elements to build your Flute... using the tools of the Motion Control Synthesis Engine, you could change from Clarinet to Flute in any number of ways (Articulation Control Assign Switches, Super Knob morphing, Key mapping, etc.)
Get out the scuba gear: In researching the viability of this I did just that, found a clarinet that basically performed as I liked with four Elements, I then copied a flute Element by Element to the empty Element 5, 6, 7, and 8 of the clarinet. I set the clarinet Elements to sound when no AssignSwitches are lit, and the Flute Elements to sound whenever Assign Switch 1 On. In a few minutes I had an extremely playable Clarinet/Flute that occupies a single Part slot.. since routing to the dual Insertion Effects is on a per Element basis, I was able to dedicate an Insertion Effect for each instrument sound. Each Element has its own EQ, so you really can refine the sound... I did not get the feeling I was somehow compromised... which is the initial concern when using less to do more. At any rate it was a good exercise in digging in to see how it would work.
But if, by your question, you mean like insert a Program Change or have the Sequencer call up a new Performance or swap the Part assigned in slot 1, no. That is not how it works.
It’s a Performance Recorder... meaning that each of the Performance Parts has its own dedicated Track. You’ll notice that there is no parameter to select a Record Track. This takes a minute to get the head around... but a Track records it’s dedicated Part whenever you engage the Part. If you are playing that sound, it is getting recorded to its own Track.
As you know with MODX Performances, you determine *when* a Part is sounding... they may not all be sounding when you initially recall the Performance... some Parts only begin sounding when you’ve pressed an Assign Switch, or advance the MW, or move the Super Knob, etc.
So having a dedicated Track for each Part means that: what you hear is what can be and will be recorded.
_ Can Clarinet and Flute share a Part? Well, yes, but you’d need to program that dual instrument Part and program the performing gesture that would swap instruments within Performance Part 1.
Snorkeler’s approach Another way to approach this would be to use 2 Parts, “link” the Clarinet and Flute Parts, “linked” Parts are recorded together (each to their own dedicated Track)... when they sound, they are recorded.
You are always playing either “linked” Parts, or you are playing an individually *selected* Part.
If you are in touch with a “linked” Part, all the “linked” Parts Tracks will Record your every move, if you then select a non-linked Part you are instantly playing and recording it, alone, to its dedicated Track.
Of course, the “link” referred to here is KBD CTRL. You dynamically control the “Record Track” by what you *select*.
Hope that makes sense. Let us know.
Thank you once again for such a detailed and comprehensive reply!
I had considered the scuba approach. I shall experiment with this the next time I’m at my MODX
I suppose I would have to record the different pan positions in real time using the extensive controls that are available
I’m looking forward to the new pattern sequencer when it lands for the MODX
The support on this site is first class ! 🙂
Each Element can be panned as you desire. For example, you could assign one of the Assign Knobs to control the Pan location of the four clarinet Elements, and another Assign Knob to control the Pan location of the four Flute Elements. By linking the four Elements In the same Control Set you can position and reposition each instrument as you may desire.
This is what is really cool about scuba diving, Element Pan is programmable so not only can each instrument within the Part have its own Insertion Effect, it can be panned independently.
This worked a treat and was so easy to implement!
Thanks once again, Phil !
