Hello,
I loaded Motif XF library on my Modx6, all ok, but when I click on Bank preset button I cannot find the list of libraries but only User (empty).
Where can I find Motif XF library just uploaded?
Where can I find my user preset performances?
I can just see (and play) Live Set.
Thank you for your help.

When you Load the Motif XF data you have several choices. Those choices determine where the data will be found. It is very much like when you first download a file to your computer — if you just click the OK button and don’t really pay attention to where you were directing it, you can lose track of where it went.

Let’s learn a few things about the MODX and navigation.
If you have the latest MODX firmware version (v2.51) installed you have the following:

2,227 Preset Performances. Preset = made by Yamaha at the Yamaha factory
640 User Performances. User = selected/created by you, the User, these can be variations on the factory data or your own selections or creations. Initially, all 640 locations are empty. (Later, you’ll learn that a set of User Bank data can become a LIBRARY. There are 8 Libraries that can be installed - each Library could hold as many as 640 Performances of your choosing).

The difference - loading data to the User Bank is loading it to RAM memory and it is overwritten when you Load a new User File into memory. One User File replaces the previously loaded User Bank.
When you load (install) a Bank as a Library, it does NOT overwrite anything, and it cannot be overwritten by a Load operation.... it will remain in your instrument until you manually remove them or initialize your entire instrument.

What’s a “Live Set”
A “Live Set” is simply a configuration of Performances listed in a specific order for easy quick access while onstage. You can assign a FOOT SWITCH so that each time you step on it, it will advance you to the next Live Set slot. On the very first Preset “Live Set” screen called “Best of MODX 1” the first item is “CFX + FM EP 2” — Tap it to recall it. Now press [EXIT] or [HOME] to view this Preset Performance in its HOME location. Only 256 of the 2,227 total Preset Performances are listed in the “Preset Live Set” area.

There are 256 Preset Live Set in the Factory Set. 16 Pages, each with 16 Performances (total 256). These Performances are selected by Yamaha staff to give the first time player a variety of sounds... this is preferable to simply stepping through all 2,227 Preset Performances one-by-one especially on your very first encounter. Just FYI the very first Performance is “CFX + FM EP” — the very last Performance is the “Multi/GM” template Performance...

There are also USER “Live Set” locations. There are 8 User Banks of Live Sets. Each User Bank has 256 Live Set slots (that’s 2048 User Live Set slots, total). There is no “Live Set” made with the Motif XF Performance data... that is for you to create if you want to create a Set List using these Performances. The best way to find them is to learn to use Category Search... see below.

FILE TYPES
When you downloaded the data, there were two files. One was a .X7U (a MONTAGE User File) - this will load the data to the MODX’s User Bank... the other was a .X7L (a MONTAGE Library File) - this will install the data to the MODX’s Flash ROM as a semi-permanent LIBRARY. You can install as many as 8 Libraries (maximum) to the Flash ROM of your MODX. Each Library could contain as many as 640 Performances.

The file extension (those letters and number after the dot) tells the file where you want to Load the data...

So our first question for you is did you load “Motif XF Performances.X7U” or did you load the “Motif XF performances.X7L”?

Using the Performance Category Search
“Motif XF Performances.X7U”— which would place them in your User Bank.
Press [CATEGORY]
Set the “Bank/Favorite” = User
Set the “Attribute” = All
The Performances from the Motif XF will all appear blue (signifying they are Multi Part Performances)
There will be 512 User Performances

If, however, you loaded the “Motif XF Performances.X7L” — This would place the 512 Performances in their own Library area.
Press [CATEGORY]
Set the “Bank/Favorite” = “Motif XF Perf...” this will be listed as an installed Library in the drop down menu
Set the “Attribute” = All
The Performances from the Motif XF will all appear blue (signifying they are Multi Part Performances)
There will be 512 Performances installed to the Motif XF Performance Library.

Extra Credit
Learning to use the [CATEGORY] search function is one of the first skills you want to master.

Thanks for your reply.
I loaded X7L and I can find those performances after scroll all the user slots (empty).
You wrote "Only 256 of the 2,227 total Preset Performances are listed in the “Preset Live Set” area."
Where can I find the other Preset Performances???
Why in some performances I cannot change Oscillator/Tune ? (can't find the page to change them).
Thanks a lot!

On the very first Preset “Live Set” screen called “Best of MODX 1” the first item is “CFX + FM EP 2” — Tap it to recall it.
Now press [EXIT] or [HOME] to view this Preset Performance in its HOME location. All Performances are accessed one after the other.

The [PERFORMANCE (HOME)] screen is where all 2,227 Preset Performances live.
If you now advance program by pressing [INC/YES] or you can move the opposite direction by pressing [DEC/NO]... or you can use the Data Dial to move through Performances.
Holding [SHIFT] + [INC/YES] advances by 10 Performances
Holding [SHIFT] + [DEC/NO] retreats by 10
But the most efficient way to navigate the Performances is to use the [CATEGORY] Search function. Please see that article on Category Search, highly recommended. (I recently spoke to a MODX owner who thought there were only 256 Performances in the instrument ... and they called me back and thanked me after discovering the almost 2000 sounds they were missing... yikes!! I don’t want to tell you how long they owned the instrument).

Multiple presses of the [CATEGORY] button advances you through your available Banks... this works the same as multiple presses of the [LIVE SET] button - it advances you to the next Bank Type.

Additionally, the Search field allows you to type in as much of the name as you remember. If you type in “CFX”, all the Performances with that in the name will appear provided the other two requirements are met.

Why in some performances I cannot change Oscillator/Tune ? (can't find the page to change them).

Not all Performances are made from the same technology. AWM2 is “Advanced Wave Memory 2” and is based on sample playback technology. Some Performance Parts use FM-X “Frequency Modulation” an updated version of the technology found in the DX7.

If you have pressed Edit and you have selected a Part, and that Part is AWM2 technology, you will see the “Osc/Tune” screen when you navigate to the Element Edit screen. Here’s how:

Example: let’s use what you have learned in this thread.
Turn On your MODX. If you have made no changes it will boot up on the following PRESET “Live Set” screen... with “CFX + FM EP 2” highlighted.

Press [EXIT] or [HOME]
The screen changes to the Preset Performances HOME location. The "Type/Name" box reveals the Type of Technology used when "TYPE" is highlighted. Shown below:

Notice that PART 1 is a “Piano Acoustic” and is labeled AMW2 (This technology uses 8 Elements; Each Element is a Waveform made up of from 1 to 256 sampled bits of audio, mapped across the keyboard).
Notice that Part 2 is “Keys FM Piano” and is labeled FM-X (This technology uses 8 Operators; each can work to build an FM sound - each can be either a Carrier or Modulator within the program).

These are two different technologies - each with its own parameter set. "Osc/Tune" is a parameter found in the AWM2 engine as the place where the sampled Waveform is assigned to the Element: Here's how to see that:
Tap the "Type/Name" box for Part 1 to view the pop-in menu on the left edge of the screen...

Tap "EDIT" to drop into EDIT on PART 1

Notice the top line will show you where you are: "Edit - Part 1 - Common"
The lower left corner does as well.

Along the bottom of the screen are the different Elements (Waveforms) that make up this Acoustic Piano Part.
Touch "Elem1" to view the first Element
The top line will change to show you where you are: "Edit - Part 1 - Element1"
You can select "Osc/Tune"

Here you see the Piano Waveform #149 "CFX pp St" (CFX acoustic grand, double soft, Stereo) velocities 2-35, note range C-2 thru G5, you can Coarse and Fine Tune this Waveform, etc., etc., etc
Each of the 8 Elements will have a different Waveform and cover a different range of Notes and/or Velocities...
Each of the 8 Elements will have an "Osc/Tune" screen of its own.

If you were to explore the PART 2 engine you will discover that the FM-X engine has an entirely different set of parameters.
instead of Elements, you find Operators (Op1 thru Op8)
You can select PART 2 by touching the box in the lower left corner that now says PART 1
A pop-up menu appears
Select PART 2 by tapping it or use the Data Dial.

Another tip is that if you press the [CATEGORY] search button multiple times, it will cycle the bank through All, Preset, User, and then the library slots.

So instead of selecting the Bank - you can instead press the [CATEGORY] button multiple times until the bank matches what you want.

So, if I would like to change the second part (Keys FM Piano) with another sound, it is not possible? This is my question.
Thanks for the clarity and patience. This Modx is fantastic!!!

AWM2 sounds are broken into smaller audible parts called elements. The core sound of each element is based off of a sample (Waveform) that can be easily changed in one operation.

FM-X sounds are broken into smaller audible parts called carriers. They are not the same and cannot be easily swapped out in one operation like elements can. The closest corollary would be to change the "Form" (spectral form) type on the carrier (sine, all, odd1&2, etc...).

Since AWM2 is sample based and FM-X is equation based - there are significant differences in how each works.

If we take a step back and not try to look what the closest comparison is to the AWM2 element (and sample) - we can instead look at swapping out Parts entirely. You can swap out an FM-X Part with a different FM-X Part entirely and achieve a change in "sound". You can even swap out the FM-X Part entirely with an AWM2 sample based Part. Then you would get the Osc/Tune menu. If I'm wanting to do this sort of thing - I would usually replace an existing Part with "Init Normal (AWM2)". If you do this, just be aware this initialized Part would not be velocity sensitive. There are adjustments to be made to get velocity sensitivity.

Yes, it is possible.

Say you want to replace the FM Piano in Part 2

From the HOME screen:
Tap the “Type/Name” box for Part 2 — a pop-in menu appears.
Tap “Category Search”
This initiates a “Part 2 - Category Search”
This search will allow you to replace the FM Piano

The Search field may contain Blue items (which are Multi Part programs) and Green items (which are Single Part programs).
With the blue items you can specify which Part # you wish to copy... because you are *replacing* an existing Part, you can replace it with just one Part.

An alternate method would be to DELETE the FM Piano in Part 2...
From the HOME screen:
Tap the “Type/Name” box for Part 2 — a pop-in menu appears.
Tap “Delete”
Confirm you wish to Delete it.

With Part 2 removed completely you are free now to Add (merge) any other Performance.
Tapping the “+” in slot 2 will initiate a “Performance Merge” Search

If you select a blue item (Multi) you will be able to Copy ‘All’ Parts from the listed program to your new creation.

The Search engine is different when *replacing* an existing Part than when you are *merging* a new program with an existing one

In both instances, however, you will need to program the behavior of your new entry. How it responds to the Super Knob and to the Common Assign Knobs must be established for this new Performance home.
