I ordered one just to see what all the fuss is about. The onboard weird digital sounds are typically useable same as on the Roli seaboard. Mostly annoying voices not natural but I will definitely check that out.
Quality of sound is the most important thing doesn't really matter how fantastic the keybed is and also MIDI implementation concerning voice manipulation.
Independent note control is cool and range beyond aftertouch and true 3D etc. Independent vibrato and bend/slide/modulation per finger is pretty cool if only that were a real world Yamaha sample or waveform. I'll report back but I don't have a Montage until the new one is released. I can try it on the Fanton.
Not until it costs less. Same reason I don't have a Roli. Or even the Keith M. K-Board Pro (which is significantly less expensive).

It does appear 75% of he cost goes into the keybed and the rest is an afterthought. Once I watched a few demos there's a lot of dialing going on on a few cheap looking knobs and not much of a screen and a lot or a ton of scrolling. Odd looking mod sliders an a few buttons and I heard that engine was pretty complicated tp program. I'm betting my ASD hydra deluxe is still a much better deal. For this to be successful you have to offer great value or extremely great sound and fantastic UI.
Perhaps driving your Hydrasynth with the Osmose will be the best use of it, as the dynamics options of the ASM are significant, and it's Poly responsive to Aftertouch, whereas the Montage/MODX are not.
You &/or someone else also mentioned the ASM and it has double engines too so I might try that first. I suppose traditional synthesis way will never fully cross over into that 3D realm and that world will remain somewhat independent for a long time coming. Meaning AWM2 or even super articulation of the Genos will not converge into a poly touch 3D universe unless Yamaha takes it there. If most musicians are replicating real world instruments Yamaha does that best. IF you want sci-fi movie score and textures morphing and sliding and bending continuously you'd go with other types of offerings such as ASM and Osmose etc. I just had a conversation with an entertainer and he said when he was a kid he asked what was music about or makes it most successful and his father said if you can hum, whistle or sing it then that's it. So as cool as all the technology is that's not what makes music successful. People will listen to the most fabulous player showcasing the coolest machine and walk away remembering none of it. But you pull out a harmonica and play a few bars of Caroline and they will sing it all day long. Nothing will ever replace he most basic sweet simple tone of an acoustic instrument so might as well prefect that instead. It's what 75% of average people relate to. Fancy sounds are cool and I like them but most people don't care about it beyond a solo for a few bars in the middle of a tune. Yamaha purchased the rights to FM or however that went down but typically we design or transform an FM voice into a playable piano-like sound and use it in a song. All this technology generally trying to go back to create a new sounding piano such as DX tines or EP etc. Why? Because it's playable. Too much manipulation and bending and modulating etc. gets annoying fast. Don't overuse it. IF the sound is already annoying then bending or modulating it doesn't help. Although I have the ASM I typically end up stopping to play the playable piano-like voices. The others are cool but no one will ever remember them or hum them or whistle them or sing them OR pay lots of money to hear them. Simple real world acoustic instruments will always be better IMO. I'd love to have a violin sampled for 3D for Osmose but let me see what these internal voices sound like, it just arrive today. What I heard on the demos didn't sound very inviting. It might move and behave naturally but the timbre of the voice has to also be natural or what does it matter?
I agree, the Osmose sound designers are spectacular bad at creating good examples of their product's prowesses in musicality, instead (seemingly) favouring demos of the playable dynamics of their keyboard. No doubt someone can make good sounds with that synth, but I haven't heard it, yet.
However, it's not that important, as the thing outputs a quite manageable stream of MPE-like information that can be used by any settings on any synth that can use it. Which is also the Montage/MODX... but for the lack of things like PolyAftertouch.
You could drive the SuperKnob or any of the other knobs via the pressure, and yet other knobs by the wiggle, and then fight to figure out why velocity mapping is so limited on the Montage/MODX.
I hear you about having real world instrument sounds with dynamics control across the board, that'd be awesome. An orchestra in a box + MPE... surely this is Yamaha's next 😉
I have the Osmose (updating it now) and I did find a few really nice voices. It all comes down to programming. Most is over the top and hurt my ears BUT with the right program it's really nice. It appeals more to mallets and pads and bell tones for my taste. I'm not sure about bowed and air instruments yet not always natural sounding. Typically they over-do the modulation sometimes very dramatically and that's not what music is typically about. I'll see about reducing that type modulation. Subtilty is much better IMO.
Ok I updated this thing and no lie it might be the greatest thing ever made. The fun factor goes to infinity and you cannot stop playing it. Maybe I'm in a zone but I didn't much care for the demos but after the update a few voices alone are worth buying it. Probably could be $5,000 without a blink. You might want to get one before they are $5,000. I'm skeptical of everything but holy crap I might not play my other keyboards for a while. This is analogous to playing a guitar but more control and options. I mean I sounded like I was playing a real string section. This will change music forever and musicians aren't going to like this because it will totally replace them, I mean a keyboard player can replace anyone now. I might never to to bed. It's late here and I've been blowing up phones telling some players I know. They are going to be pissed but I don't care. So is this a novelty that will wear off in a week? No I don't think so and it the programming keeps improving there's no limit. Maybe more keys are coming beyond the 49 so that might be a reason to wait. Seriously the price could go to $5,000 and I'd still buy it but don't tell them. I had the Roli and this is a million times better because you can play it straight or play the bitch like a freak'n guitar. Don't tell Yamaha, oh wait they are probably playing it right now like I am. Next level and shocking it's the year 2023 and we're just now getting this.
According to the Osmose website they next batch won't ship until Nov/Dec. That's forever. Glad I got mine, I had no idea but I guess they are a small company and demand is likely crazy high. I read that C19 delayed the intended release which was supposed to be sometime in 2020 or 21. I think SW is backordered something like 140 units. This is going to be like waiting on a PS5. Mine is not for sale unless you want it for a crazy price.
