Performances are built up from Part 1. It acts as the "anchor" Part for the Performance. The "Category Main" and " Sub Category" that you assign to the program occupying Part 1 will be adopted for the entire Performance.

From the HOME screen:
Press [EDIT]
Press [PART SELECT 1]
If not already lit, press the lower [COMMON] button
Touch "Part Settings" > "General"

Here you'll see the Part Category Main and Sub Category Assignments. Additionally, on the same line you can Name the Part.

Hello BM, turned up trumps again. Your earlier teachings helped too - STORE! I've got the hang of it now, thank you, and started in re-assigning and re-naming a few items. Figuring out which parameters were used to do what is not as easy as it sounds, either ... !

How the performance category is inherited from PART 1 (the anchor PART) is a rare case where the documentation (owners manual, reference manual, parameter list, new features list) does not spell out or even mention the behavior. Usually there is some text to reference, but I see none for this particular setting.

I say rare because generally the documentation does a satisfactory job of describing most of the parameters.

Hello Jason - I spent some time searching before I asked the question, seeing as it's such an important function, but like you, no dice. No-one else seems the least bit interested, which I find odd but there it is. Incidentally, if anyone uses the route provided by BM, there is no point in allocating a new name at the category assign screen, as you'll have to repeat it anyway at the 'Store' function.

I must add that the documentation provided has proved of limited value - the 'Owner's Manual' at least has an index, but only scratches the surface, while the 'Reference Manual' has no index at all - so finding anything relevant is a bit hit and miss. The 'Search' box on this site either can't find anything, or comes up with masses of previous Posts which may or may not hit on the problem. The huge amount of traffic on this excellent site indicates the lack of guidance elsewhere, but having said that I much prefer conferring with such experts than wading through Manuals ... !

Hello BM - I tried that - called up the full search facility from the Adobe Edit menu, and typed in 'assign a user performance to a category' and it came up blank in both the Owner and Reference Manuals. So this site is the best recourse - the Montage is so many-layered and capable of so much that I can't imagine any Manual being adequate anyway. The Manuals get you off the ground but you're flying blind - people here are like Air Traffic Controllers, keeping things moving along as they should. For which I am very grateful!

My previous statement about not finding the feature in the manuals includes using the PDF versions and searching for very broad terms like "category" (which turns up lots of hits - filtering out all non-applicable "hits"), "part 1" (which also turned up lots of hits - filtering out all non-applicable "hits"), "anchor" (no hits, but this is understandable given it's a "custom" term), etc.

Not to say it doesn't exist - but a reasonable amount of effort using PDF search engines hasn't turned up the description of this feature in the multiple sources I previously listed as searching. Therefore, the suggestion would be either to cite where in the documentation this is information is or, if it does not exist, revise the documentation to add this basic programming fact.

The Name you give to Part 1 is totally a different parameter from the Name when you STORE the Performance. One is the Part Name, the other is the Performance Name.

The Part Name might be "CFX Concert", while the Performance Name could very well be the title of the Song you use with this Performance. You'll find you will edit your favorite sounds slightly differently from Performance to Performance.

On the subject of searching within a PDF, try to find a concise term that expresses what you're looking for... "Category Main" would be sufficient, or "Part Name"...

Unless you guess every word, you'll be lucky to find anything useful. After a while, if you start to build your own mental structure of Montage... for example knowing whether to look under Performance Common, or under Performance Part when you are searching for answers, will help a lot.

Hello Jason and BM - ah! - I get the difference between naming at the 'Assign' stage and the 'Store' stage. It hadn't occurred to me to use different names (I get confused enough already!) but I see the need could arise. As to phrasing the questions ... well ... how long is a piece of string? I try to phrase them so that they can only mean one thing taken as a whole - but the search engine seems to pick up on every word! I vaguely remember a convention where you placed a hyphen instead of a space between words, that told the computer to look at the whole phrase, and not the individual
words. Would that work?

I think the hand waving of how to search documentation is misplaced.

I'll go as far as saying this PART 1 category behavior is not documented anywhere in PDF documents, please fix the documentation.
