Hi, new here. Just got the Montage 8. Trying to learn and figure things out. This has been a daunting but rewarding task.

The built-in click is great, but I don't see a way to change the time signature from 4/4. Hopefully, I'm missing something and can change it to 6/8 or whatever I want.

I currently use a separate source on stage for the click. If I can route the built-in click to one of the Montage's outputs, that's a great advantage for me. Simply because each performance remembers it's bpm and the click changes automatically when I select a new performance from the live set. This will require me to be able to change the time signature though. Please help

Hi.
To change the time Signature :
Performance > Play/rec,

By Default you do not have direct acces to the time signature (black font on the time signature slot) :

Press the rec button, you will able to change the time signature (green font on the time signature slot) :

You have all this choices :

Choose one and press stop button.

Store your performance.

For output clic :

Utility > Tempo Settings :

Generaly, click is set only for record.

Set it to always for your stage using :

By default, click out is set to Main L&R :

Use the Click Out Slot to select Assign L&R for example :

Okay, thank you so much for the detailed instruction!

I did that and I was able to change the time signature to 6/8, but it changed all of my performances to 6/8. They all still showed 1/4 time on the screen, but it was 6/8 playing (3/4 actually).

Hum, yes you're right, it change the time signature for all, sorry.
I did not see another "place" to change the time signature, perhaps bad_mister have a good answer for this point.

The Time Signature can be changed when setting up to Record to the Performance Recorder. This will not serve your purpose on stage (at least I don't think so).

The Click function can be set to count (click) at 1/4 notes (default), also available are 1/16 notes, 1/8 notes, 1/2 notes or whole notes. Having the click On "Always" might be nerve racking between numbers.

You need something that can memorize tempo and time signature and be recalled when you recall the Performance. You don't want to have to adjust this click for each and every song while on stage. And you need to have control over starting and stopping this conductor click.

An Arpeggiator would be perfect for this purpose. Arpeggio data can be created at any Time Signature. And you can create any kind of click sound and accents you desire and route it to a discreet Assignable Out. It can be directed wherever you need it on stage. A "fixed note" arpeggio can be assigned to a drum kit sound. You can assign the entire drum Part to the Assignable Out, or, just the key or keys you use to create the "conductor" can be individually routed to one of the assignable outputs. (It's tricky, but very doable).

What remains to figure out is the best way for you, as keyboard player, to count-off and start the click arpeggio. You could map control over triggering the arp to a single key (when you touch the key it will begin and continue until you either toggle it off, or you press the front panel [STOP] button).

For example, in a situation where the drums start the song you'll want to start the arp with a separate (silent key) many use the lowest to highest key. Touch that key again to toggle the arp Off, or hit STOP.

Actually, Off is not going to be a problem, what you will need to work out for yourself is how you're comfortable starting the click and counting-in. (This can be a very "personal taste" thing. Some bands feed the conductor click to the drummer, and the drummer counts the band in. In such a case, you can just start it it and let the drummer count the band in... Then when appropriate, stop it.

You will need to (pre) assign the conductor arpeggio to the Performance you are going to use. This will also allow the Tempo and Time Signature to be documented and recalled.

How this will work when you can create your own Arps
Create the conductor click by recording it to either the internal (or your computer sequencer, if you prefer). You'll need to export a .mid file and load it to Montage. Once you have the MIDI data in the internal Montage Play/Rec function, you can convert this data to a User Arp using the Convert Type = FIXED.

A "fixed note" arpeggio plays back exactly as you played it... Within the rule of arp creation. Once converted to a User Arp you can assign it to any Part in any Performance. Set the Note region to trigger it, and in the case of a drum kit assign the outputs.

How you can build your own 6/8 metronome now
Using the 6/8 arpeggio data already in memory, Note Limit the Drum Part so only the hihats sound.
Try the Drum Arp "MB_6/8 Pop" for example
Set the Part Note Limits to F#1-A#1 (just the high hiats)
Assign this arpeggio in your Performance to a drum kit Part.

If you don't like the hihats you can edit the kit and substitute any sound(s) that work.

Ultimately, you'll be able to create your own arpeggios and customize the data. But I think arpeggios are the way to go in terms of creating a conductor click track.

Brillant Phil, i was thinking use an 6/8 drum arpeggio but not thinking isolating an specific instrument of the drum kit 😉

You have just blown my mind. I will have to eat this elephant one bite at a time. It sounds great, I just have no experience with on board recording or arpeggios. I knew I was in trouble when I heard BM say, "it's tricky, but very doable."

I would love for the onboard click to have the ability to do this, of course, because that's easiest for me. It seems like the technology is already in the machine for this to be possible.

Thank you so much for the ability to do it now, I just have to do some studying. I definitely want to go with the on/off lowest/highest key, and I will record something onboard. Also, thank you for breaking it down as in-depth as you did. I appreciate you making it so easy that a 5th grader can understand it, I just wish you could make it so easy that a kindergartner could understand it.
