To Badmister, or anyone that can answer. I have read a good amount on the new Montage, and some of its "limitations" as compared to the Motif. For history, I have owned many Motif's, starting from the original, on up to my current XF7 Anniversary, and about 7 others in-between. I play live primarily, and frankly almost never use the internal sequencer or pattern generator. If I needed, I have other boards that I can do those with anyways.
What I do like to do is make performances, with editing of standard sounds. That is where I seem to not be able to find a confirmation if the Montage can do it. Most the posting on Motifator is negative... To clarify, I tend to create splits and layers for my live performances, using several internal patches, and would need to still do that. Further, by "editing" what I mean is I may want to adjust a portamento, cutoff, effects, etc... and be able to SAVE them into the performance. I do NOT sample...ever, and I am aware it cannot do that.
All in all I use the Motif in a fairly basic "live" mode to be able to go between sounds, some that I have modified. Sort of a high-end stage keyboard. If the Montage can still do that, with the improved user interface and sounds as well, then it will be a good "upgrade" for my personal use.
Just want to confirm this is possible as it isn't clear. Thanks in advance!
It's totally possible.
Simple answer. Exactly what I wanted. Thank you as always!
Give us time and we can get deep into that subject, but this is the time for me to absorb a new system. The question has long been asked, "what's after the Motif?" ~ we now have that answer, Montage. Good news is you already can use the knowledge you have of Motif and immediately apply it here.
not everyone is negative. I don't care about the sequencer in my XF i haven't used once in 4 years .. so you could go ahead and tell me you hid one in the Montage and I wouldn't bother to look for it. I'm a live performer, and Montage is doing TONS of stuff in their jump from XF to make what I need to do much easier and more powerful. just a few that I ran into the most frequently:
- I couldn't edit alot of the voice-level parameters at Performance level - I had to create numerous slight variations on a voice to put in different performances for different songs ... SOLVED.
- Sound would cut off if I switched Voice or Perf mid-song - SOLVED.
- only 4 Voices per Performance, where I had some songs that required 6 or 7 sounds. I custom-designed Voices that delivered two or more voices by selective element selection and design. This created undesirable tradeoffs, there's only 2 insertion effects for all 8 elements, system effects are the same for all 8 elements, etc ... SOLVED with 8 parts per Performance.
- ... I could go on. And I don't even know how I'll use motion sequence abilities.
my first practical concern was I spent monhts programming alot of custom designed sounds for the several bands I play with in XF - do I have to start from scratch? NO - Montage will let me immediately import my XF work so I can still play as I learn to take advantage of Montage!
Of course we can edit all of the detailed part level parameters at the Performance level, and save this work, how could they release a new top-line performance board that we couldn't save our work on?
As we await ... I get excited. I just have to decide how long before I pull the trigger. I'm gigging with what I already have, after all ...
