Hi. My faithful 1991 SY77 is still going strong. But like many others the back-light of the LCD display is now very faint, making it almost impossible to read.
To replace an SY77-99 back-light the entire synth has to be disassembled, from the underside to the top (display) layer; several layers of circuit boards!
In future, when the Montage display gets very weak or breaks down, do we have to dismantle the entire synth just to replace it? Great if it can be replaced by undoing it from the top surface...
Hi Sam, the technology in the backlight of the SY/TG goes back 25-26 years, but the screen still being on the top of the instrument and service entry being on the bottom, means the disassembly of the instrument to reach it. For an authorized service center this is child's play... If you like to DIY, get the Service Manual, and count your screws 🙂
Whatever you do don't touch the screen and it will last a really long time. 😉
I've replaced the LCD on a SY77, and TG77. I just took Pictures, and sorted the screws. It's not very difficult, I was a little nervous the first time though, but the result was Incredible. The blue and white is so intense, it almost hurts my eyes.
I do think modern displays would last longer though. SY77/99/TG77 are specially known for having faulty LCD backlight compared to other Keyboards.
