Kudos to Yamaha and the gurus in this forum
Two and a half years ago I got a Montage 8, pretty good for a guy that has just turned 64. It has led me into learning about domains I never thought I was interested in - such as synth programming, getting a home DAW studio and learning it's software, mastering CDs, etc. What a voyage of discovery! I've even published a CD of instrumental music, solely using Montage performance audio tracks, no MIDI - I can see I need to learn about this in the near future.
The gurus and users of this forum have been so helpful and an inspiration, thank you all! I've mostly been a snorkler (to use this sites' Montage analogy), although I have free dived on a few occasions. Not scuba diving yet, but you all have given the wherewithal to do this when/if I'm ready. Throughout my life I've had a few synths, most were toys compared to the Montage. I did have a Yamaha S80 and there are a few voices that I wish would be converted to Montage performances. I'd pay for that service, but haven't really seen any sources/sites that indicate they'd do so. For example - there's a simple Piano/strings voice on the S80 tat I've never been able to realize, even with all of the preset piano & strings performances. Oh well... I guess I need to learn much more:)
The Question about renting a Montage
In about 2 weeks I've been invited to play/perform across the country and my Montage 8 is too much to try and take along with me (if only I played the piccolo). So I've found a backline shop that is renting me a Montage. Here's the question - how do I make sure that everything on my Montage gets transferred to the rental? Do I simply make a backup thumbdrive and then download its contents to the rental? Is that it? I'm assuming the rental will have the 3.0 OS, but if it's 2.5, would the process still be the same, or is there something else needed? Last but not least, I don't want to leave my performances, libraries, etc. on the rental when I return it. Would I just create a backup of the rental Montage when I recieve it and restore that backup when I'm finished playing, prior to returning?

You will want to put the Updater file for Version 3.00 and your Backup File on your thumb drive. I’d put them on two drives; one I’d keep as an emergency backup (never leaves my suitcase). The other I would use all the time I was out and about.
Check the version of the rental... and if not 3.00 update the unit. It matters not how old the version it is was, updating it with 3.00 will bring it entirely up to date.
Reboot, then restore your Backup File.
Extra Credit:
Yes, you can keep the Updater File (8N70OS_.PGM) and your Backup File (.X7A) on the same USB stick.
(In spite of what the instruction say, more than just the Updater file can be on your USB stick. What is actually meant is you can only keep one Updater File on any one drive).
Do not worry about restoring the Backline unit when you complete your gig - Assume that the backline company will have any data they wish to reinstall on a safety drive of their own.
You might want to go to [UTILITY] > “Settings” > “System” > tap “Initialize All Data” before returning the instrument. This will clear your data, and leave the MONTAGE ready for the next person to load their Backup file.
