Thought it would be fun to share pics and descriptions of our set-ups.

Please list out all the gear in the pic and describe it in as much detail as you'd like. I'll start! :p

Here's my current set-up:

So of course we have the Montage 7. The other gear is a Anode Meeblip, TC-Helicon Voice Live Touch 2, Korg SQ-1, Tascam DP-32 and KRK Rockit 5 Monitors.

Audio wise, I run everything in to the Tascam - it serves as a mixer when I'm just messing around, and as a multi-track recorder when I want to lay down tracks. The DP-32 is also connected via MIDI to the Montage. It basically just sends a clock so I can sync up multiple tracks of arps. It also serves is a 32 track digital recorder so I can get really freaky with sound layers.

I like to do a lot of far out vocal stuff, so the Voice Live Touch 2 is a big part of my sound. Nothing captivates the human ear/brain like the sound of another human voice. My voice is horrible but this little guy helps me sound really good! It has multiple effects, pitch correction and harmony generation. So send MIDI from the Montage into the Voice Live Touch 2 as this helps the Voice Live select harmonies on the vocals. As a side note, I find vocals to be a big missing hole in a lot of electronic music. It really makes a song stand out when you have SOME kind of humans speech. If you don't like to do your own vocals, there's plenty of free vocal samples available at multiple sites. Like I said, I'm no singer but I can do pretty good vocal effects stuff. I just think up some catchy lyrics and go for it.

OK moving on to the Korg SQ-1 sequencer. I use this mainly to sequence the Meeblip, but sometimes it's fun to MIDI it to the Montage. I will also MIDI the Montage to the Meeblip if I want to play it from a keyboard. It's a fun little digital Monosynth with an analog filter. It adds some nice when I am doing my electronic stuff. I run the audio from it into the Montage so I have all those effects.

For monitoring, I send audio out of the DP-32 to the Rockit 5s. They sound pretty good, but due to their small size, they don't do a real good low end for bass and rumble effects. I will be adding a sub by the end of the year so I can rattle some windows. πŸ˜‰

Not shown in my MXI V250 condenser mic for vocals. Sometimes I will use a Shure SM58 if I want a different sound.

So that's about it. I will probably have this configuration for a few weeks. After that, I just switch different gear in and out. I have a nice variety of synths and groove boxes to keep things interesting.

I'll do my best to answer questions about the set-up or an individual piece of gear.

So now let's see and hear about YOUR setup!

A Roli Seaboard! NICE! So can you go into some detail about what you have going on? Like how you are using the Roli and the tablets with the Montage,, You have a pretty slick setup there, would love to hear the details!

Hello Scott and Wow! Also Wow! to Michael and Joel ... I'm hoping my Montage 7 will obviate the need for anything else! At least for my modest demands (governed by my modest ability!). I've tried Cubase etc:, but I don't like Steinberg, they jerk me around too much, so I don't use VSTs any more. I attach my last set up - a Tyros 3 driving a Korg M3 module - and the one before, the Korg M3-73 driving a Yamaha MOX6 (that one was a complete failure - I never liked the MOX). I use Alesis M1 monitors - question there, they seem a bit boomy with the Montage, so should I be looking at something else?

Hey there Rod and thanks. I have NO doubt the Montage is all one needs. But then there's a difference between wants and needs. πŸ˜‰ For me the real fun comes hooking different things together and seeing how they interact. Like I said in my post, my studio isn't a static set-up, I change it up frequently to keep things fresh and fun.

As for the monitors, you should be using something better than the M1s with the Montage. The exact ones depend on your room size, treatment, etc. I do know you get what you pay for with monitors. You just dropped over 3000 grand on a new synth so don't go cheap on the monitors. (Funny story: When I got the Montage open and set up my wife was appalled that it didn't have built-in speakers "At that price, it should!" she said!)

Anyway, your set up looks really fun! Keep the pics coming guys!

Hello Scott - I completely understand your chopping and changing. I tend to do the same (if I can get it past my wife - I understand that, too). The Montage is supposed to end all that. Well, that's the theory! We'll see ... as to the monitors, they're 10 years old now, and I suspect technology has moved on. My music room is very small, an 8' cube in fact, so I don't need a lot of power. But where to go? I imagine that Yamaha monitors would most nearly match the Montage, so HS7s may be the answer? Any other comments welcome!

A Roli Seaboard! NICE! So can you go into some detail about what you have going on? Like how you are using the Roli and the tablets with the Montage,, You have a pretty slick setup there, would love to hear the details!

The center of my setup is Cubase (currently 8.5 Pro) running on the Surface 3 (the tablet on the right). Both the Montage and the Roli are connected to the Surface 3 via a USB hub (the Surface 3 only has one USB connector).

In Cubase projects that use the Roli, I have a MIDI track devoted to the Roli. Input to that track is set to the Roli. Output from that track is set to the Montage. Depending on the output channel setting for that MIDI track, I can direct MIDI events originating from the Roli to any Part of a Montage Performance. I'm currently using Parts in the 9-16 range for the Roli, since there's no need for keyboard input from the Montage when I'm using the Roli instead.

The iPad (the tablet on the left) has 2 uses: running Cubase IC Pro, and reading documentation (Cubase manuals, Montage manuals, articles here on Yamahasynth, etc). Cubase IC Pro turns the iPad into a very useful control panel for Cubase. I can do things with one touch while I'm playing the keyboard that would be impractical using the Cubase 8.5 Pro user interface, especially on a screen as small as the Surface 3. Cubase IC Pro connects to Cubase running on the Surface 3 via my WiFi local area network.

I'm enjoying seeing and reading about everyone else's setups. This thread was a great idea. Thanks!

Please bear with me as I am new to setting up all of this gear and not even sure if this is the best place to ask the following. I have a Montage 8 , older Akai APC40 controller for Ableton (still not sure if I will continue with Ableton or move to Cubase or Sonar for my DAW.?) , Sure SM58 microphone, Scarlett 18i8 Focusrite interface (Likely obsolete with Montage interface?), Voicelive 2 and KRK VST4 monitors.

First of all Scott like you, I also like to add voice to my tracks and so VoIcelive is a game changer for my pitchy singing. I'm also open to getting a better controller like the Tascam Dp-32 or newer model based on forum opinion. I'm just not too sure on how to connect my gear together and so any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all for your responses.
Bernie

Hello Scott,
I have the Voice Live Touch 2 and I'm struggling to get it to wrk with my MoX8. Im guessing it has to do with my settings. Did you have any problems? I'm curious to know exactly how you have it connected and what the settings need to be on.

Thanks in advance.
Ed

Hello Scott - the August responses to your original Post set me off, and I totally re-hashed my tiny music room with all the gear I couldn't sell (at a fair price!). Pocture attached - I can play any one, any two, or all three via MIDI from the Montage 7 - the other two are a Yamaha Tyros 3 across the top and a Korg M3-76 on the right. Linked via a little Chesley pre-amp mixer to a pair of Alesis M1s (and also to a Sony mini-hifi which gives better results on certain ranges). The computer is only for manuals, this site, and my own procedures notebook - and 'Connect' - I don't use any DAW at all. I am still thinking about the speakers (the M1s are old and a bit boomy with the Montage) - I don't want climical precision, I prefer a little colour, and had almost settled on the Rokit 5s, which I see you have and find them a little lacking in bass response. My music room is tiny, literally a 2.4m (8') cube, so I'm now thinking perhaps the Rokit 6s - have you changed too? If so, what to and what do you think of them?

I kind of agree with that monitor comment. This is where sound quality gets lost because the total focus of finances goes toward the instrument itself, mixer, software, computer etc. If your studio monitors aren't at least half as expensive as your Montage then you're probably getting less than impressive reproduction quality. About like looking at standard definition 480 vs 1080p. Loudness is not necessarily synonymous with reproduction quality. At low levels I like to hear all of the transients and that requires high dollar components. Room treatment is pretty important as well. At some point of course you get to the diminishing returns threshold but standard powered monitors are just not going to make Montage sing like she is able. Another litmus test is that if you get tired of listening rather quickly then you are getting fatigued because of noise that you didn't know you had. Kind of like staring out a foggy window and your eyes get tired of focusing. The purer the sound reproduction quality, the longer you can listen comfortably.
