I've read that sounds from the Motif XS can be loaded into the montage by using the Motif XF editor. I downloaded this but when I try to open an XOA file that was saved on my XS it doesn't give that file option in the dropdown list from the editor - only X3E X0E X1E M4E M3E X3E. Am I missing something here?
You're missing that to read a .X0A Motif XS File in the Motif XF Editor you most use IMPORT not "Open"
The program "opens" data that it creates, and IMPORTs a wider variety of data.
Click File > IMPORT... > a two-sided window appears on the left is the computer file search on the right is the internal memory of the instrument
Click on the Open Folder icon on the left side to search for files... You should be able to set the file search for .X0A files required.
You can view what's in the file on the left side and build a custom internal bank by moving the data from the left side (the file) to the right side (the XF internal).
Hope that helps.
Thanks. That confirms what I'd just figured out. It's all a bit hypothetical at the minute as I won't get my montage till the end of July but I was trying it on some xoa files to see the principle behind it. Can the resultant x3e file be loaded into the montage and does it just place the voices as single part performances into the user bank?
Correct.
I don't follow the meaning of the original post. Yes, Montage is compatible with previous generation Motif libraries, but why would anyone load XS sounds into the Montage when the new AWM2 engine is more powerful with nearly ten times more wave memory and twice as much effects? Use the new stock sounds instead! They sound better, for God´s sake! *Facepalm*
I'm not talking about the preset sounds on the xs - I have done a lot of editing to create exactly the sound i want from certain circumstances and the montage can play these sounds as long as they are built on the internal waveforms (which they are) . Not everyone sticks to the presets.

I made approx 200 sounds during the last 7 years on a Motif which I use in some bands. I hope I'll get my Montage next month. The first thing I'll do is transfer my sounds/performances/master-modes so I can use the Montage live. These sounds are adjusted to live performing so it would take ages to remake them from scratch. Some of the sounds are remade from earlier synths. The reason i didn't go from a Triton Extreme to the Kronos yet is that I can't load old voices. Of course I expect to upgrade many sounds in the coming year. But in the meantime I'm on stage next month.
Good luck transferring the Motif Performances .
Quint,
You cannot import or transfer old Motif Performances into Montage, period. What you can do, its recreate or rebuild the performances within the Montage synthesis, Yamaha promised including all the Motif's line samples, but realistically nobody knows if its true. Good Luck with the performances, will take you at least another 7 years to recreate them. (At least until Yamaha update the firmware and give customers the real stuff) . lol.
