Neither of my macs are reading any USB formatted with my Montage. Therefore cannot update OS. Anyone else run into this issue and/or found a solution? The Montage has the original OS 1.01.0 and my Mac's are El Capitan. Tried it with a couple thumb drives. Thanks!
I have a PC and my flash drives were already formatted so I didn't have to format them. Does the Montage provide an option for formatting such as PC or Mac? Should be mentioned in the Montage literature though. Sorry, I can't answer.
Thanks for responding. Yes the Montage formats the drive. No options that I see.
Try using your Mac to format the drive and then see if the Montage will read it.
I have two Macs, one on El Cap and the other on Mavericks, they can both read USB sticks formatted by Montage and any other FAT formatted stick. There's really no reason why a Mac wouldn't read it, it's pretty standard. Was Montage able to see and format it? If so, try formatting it again. If not, try another USB stick. Also try different USB port on your Mac. There's a list of compatible USB drives on Yamahasynth. I've used Kingston, Patriot, and Toshiba and they've all worked fine. Good luck.

Gary,
Thanks, yes tried two different usb brands, all different usb ports on an imac and macbook pro, no luck getting either computer to recognize it. Tried formatting with the mac as well, then putting os update on the usb, but then my Montage wouldnt accept the update, and the instructions say only to use a drive formatted by the Montage anyhow. Yes doesn't make sense but thats what's happening and it is preventing me from installing the updates. And previously used usb on many keyboards etc. never had this issue.

Here is the list of compatible drives. Though mine are of the approved brands, PNY and SanDisk, they might not be the correct models. Wish this snafu had been mentioned in the instructions.

Hi Jeff, just to be clear about what is happening to you. You say neither of your Macs can read the file. I tend to agree. There is nothing for the Mac to do with the file. It should just be able to see its name.
Can you see the file name? That is all the "reading" that the computer will do. Since I see none of the key words ('unzip', the '8N70OS_.PGM' file name, etc.), I'll take this tactic in seeking to offer you assistance.
_ The download comes zipped. You need to download the file and unzip the contents on your computer. Copy just the file 8N70OS_.PGM to your USB drive.
Are you comfortable unzipping and copying a file?
Are you able to see the zipped file on your Mac?
Have you successfully transferred the 8N70OS_.PGM to the USB stick?
_The fact is most USB drives require no formatting (they come formatted for use).
The Montage cannot "see" the file, strange as that sounds, you will never "see" the file in the Montage screen,... In order to update you must hold the two buttons as instructed as you Power On the unit. Then and only then does the Montage Updater routine "find" the file.
Try formatting with the Mac with disk Utility it supports Fat for read and write. I had this problem with the Montage and later formatted My Samsung SSD drive using The iMac OS X El Capitan to FAT via Disk Utility then later copy *N700S_,PGM to formatted drive followed the instruction that came with Montage OS updater 1.10. It work.
Thanks for all the suggestions, the problem turned out to be Montage's compatibility with my USB drives. Apparently it is not compatible with 64gb USB's which is all I had on hand. A 32gb PNY USB worked.
The OS updating instructions also were pretty murky in a number of ways as well for instance not mentioning there was a list of compatible drives, saying you need to format the drive in the Montage before proceeding when the Montage gives you no option to format drives already FAT format, etc. and not telling you that a FAT formatted drive is actually perfectly fine.
Looking forward to learning much, much more about this amazing instrument and using it to help complete a current film project.

I succedded after having understood this: On the Mac, format the USB Stick as FAT. Then only copy the Montage system file in the downloaded folder—not the whole folder itself—to the Stick. Eject it, plug it into the Montage Device slot, then switch Montage on whilst holding Arrow Up and Utility.
As mentioned before, when dealing with keyboards or what I would consider to be "trailing edge" (this is a good, not bad thing. Use the right standard for the requirement - something mature instead of leading edge) equipment in terms of USB - I always purchase the smallest size drive available. Underlying technology and addressability limits come into play with larger USB/SDCard/etc drives and media. It happens to be that 4GB was the smallest size I could source at my local electronics specialty store so I purchased 4 of them (they're relatively cheap) so I would have spares. These are dedicated to Montage.
Part of this comes from using an even older keyboard (Yamaha MO6) which was purchased many many years after it was produced and USB had rolled ahead - and sizes had exceeded the max the MO6 could recognize.
Glad you worked out the issue.
